Place of birth of Alexander Mitchell in 1856?.....
Alexander Mitchell was born 14th May 1856, Glasgow Central, parents were James Mitchell and Agnes Parker. But I just can't make out the address. I see there is a Mauchline Street near Eglinton Street which drew my attention - I'm sure the name begins with M, but the shape of Mauchline doesn't seem quite right and I'm not at all sure that its in the right district anyway.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Addresses the Mitchell family have lived at include:
Eglinton Street 1858 & 1862
Springburn Road 1865 & 1871
Caledonia Road 1881
Fountainwell Road 1891
Bit I don’t think it says any of the above!

Hi Lesley
Took a peek at the certificate but the only thing I can determine is that it begins with an 'M' by comparison to the other Ms on the certificate. It is a terrible image. Best of luck with it

Hi Annette
Thanks for looking at it - yes, the M is the only bit I'm sure of!!
It looks like Morganlitts??
I found a Mordaunt Street, which looks about the right "shape" word-wise but it looks far from what I'd think of as "Central" - its south east of the centre, near Dalmarnock Road. I'm not too great on Glasgow areas either so I'm a bit lost here!
Thanks anyway
Best wishes

Hi Alison & IanS
You're right - it does looks very like "Margaret" ...but I can find no sign of a Margaret Street on www.mappy.co.uk or on http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/searches/streets_m.html
Unable to find Peebles Street either - can you tell me what the adjoining streets are called on your map please Alison?
Why oh why didn't they employ folk who could write more clearly???
Thanks for your help
Best wishes

The mystery street
Hi Wilma
Thanks for looking those up.
I'm sure, like a lot of these things, it will eventually come out in the wash!
"Margaret" looked a very likely contender for the first bit too...
I'm almost tempted to contact SP and ask if a clearer copy could be provided, but half the problem is the awful handwriting which is not their fault at all! I'm not convinced that seeing it any bigger or with less "noise" would make a jot of difference.
Thanks for your help
Best wishes

Margaret Street can be found on the 1857-1858 Ordnance Survey plan at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... entre.html if you select map VI.11.6. On that map zoom in on the east side, just above the centre line. Looks like it is a couple of blocks east of Queen Street Station.
To see the location on a current map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk and search on Martha Street. That seems to be pretty much on the site of Margaret Street.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

As Andrew said it's pretty much in the location of Martha St. Martha street used to be Little Hamilton Street, which in turn is on the same page as Margaret Street on the 1913/14 valuation Rolls.
