I'm stuck....maybe someone can help?

Post by Anihana » Mon Apr 23, 2007 11:57 am

Hey guys

FANTASTIC SITE!!

Been on the net till the early hours of the morning the last three nights and feel a bit over overwhelmed with all the info running through my mind as I read pages & pages of info looking for links....it's nice to find a forum that has people in the same situation as me & also with some knowledgeable people who are happy to help :)

So far me & mum have found the following:

Me Andy 8)
Mum Michele
Her mum Mary
Her dad (part of the Scotish side comes in here) Alexander Ross Thomson
Birth:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/K ... homson.jpg

His dad William Thomson
Birth: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/K ... nBirth.gif
Marriage: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/K ... MARRIA.jpg

His dad James Thomson (James & Betsy Marriage) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/K ... sBetsy.gif

His dad George Thomson, he married Ann Bernie

So were up to my great, great, great, great grandfather 8) I have linked the Statutory records above where we got some of the info from.

Were having a really hard time getting info off the Marriage record of James Thomson. Looks like plenty leads for us to go with on that record but just can't read it :(

If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it......some other bit's I can't work out are:

Alexanders birth record....under where born it says something then Arbuthnott? & I can't see what his mothers maiden name is? :(

William - born 1864 etc. at Parish of Fetteresso but what does that say above & under P.M? What does it say his father James job is? Under Signature etc. it says James Thomson, Father, then what?

James & Betty Pyper marriage record....can't hardly read any of it :( I can see James father is George Thomson, can't work out job or his wife's name/names. What is in the 2nd box under their names? No point listing all I can't see read it is most of it.

Sorry for the long 1st post but I'm excited & frustrated to have the info in front of me but not readable to me.

As mentioned any help would be great.

Cheers
Anihana

Hi there and welcome!

Here's a start......

I think the parent names of James are George THOMSON and Ann THOMSON ms BIRNIE. George is deceased in 1862 but Ann is still living. James is age 26 so born about 1836.

A look for her DC finds one in Fetteresso:

1884 THOMSON ANN BIRNIE REID F 75 FETTERESSO /KINCARDINE 258/01 0004

A further look for the family on the 1851 census finds what I think is them minus James:

1851 Scotland Census
about Ann Thomson
Name: Ann Thomson
Age: 44
Estimated birth year: abt 1807
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: St Nicholas, Aberdeen
Parish Number: 258
Civil parish: Fetteresso
County: Kincardineshire
Address: Kempstonhill
Occupation: Crofter
ED: 7
Page: 14 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 49
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1851_55
Household Members: Name Age
Ann Thomson 44
George Thomson 17
Jane Thomson 8
Joseph Thomson 11

and this is that same household from 1841...

Alexr Thomson abt 1829 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
Ann Thomson abt 1807 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
Ann Thomson abt 1828 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
Elspet Thomson abt 1832 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
George Thomson abt 1802 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
George Thomson abt 1834 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
James Thomson abt 1837 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
Joseph Thomson abt 1840 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258

Of course TalkingScot loves a challenge to deciper handwriting and poorly digitized images....but in your estimation if the quality is truly unacceptable you should certainly contact GROS via a contact form link found on the www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk website. They are quite happy to provide a photocopy or a direct scan that is very often a marked improvement!!!! Don't be shy...and don't feel like a complainer....you paid for it and you should be happy with what you received! :D

Best wishes
Jean

First of all...

A warm welcome to Talking Scot [scotland-flag]
Anihana wrote:Alexanders birth record....under where born it says something then Arbuthnott? & I can't see what his mothers maiden name is?
I just know this can't be right, but it seriously looks like Gyratomyre parish of Arbuthnott!
His Mother's maiden name is Falconer
William - born 1864 etc. at Parish of Fetteresso but what does that say above & under P.M? What does it say his father James job is? Under Signature etc. it says James Thomson, Father, then what?
He was born at 10:45PM (10h 45m pm)
His father was a Farm Servant
The word under James signature is "Present" meaning he was present at the birth (although in those days unlikely to have been in the same room  )
James & Betty Pyper marriage record....can't hardly read any of it :( I can see James father is George Thomson, can't work out job or his wife's name/names. What is in the 2nd box under their names? No point listing all I can't see read it is most of it.
Going to have to come back to you on that one. I need to do a bit of playing around with it.

I've don the best I can but t really is a very poor image.

James Thomson, Farm Servant, Batchelor aged 26
Usual address is that Nether ?? again
Father George Thomson, Crofter - deceased
Mother Ann? Birnie or Burns?

Betsy Pyper, Farmers daughter, spinster, aged 17
Same usual address
Father William Pyper, farmer
Mother Mary Chad or Child?

Jean is right, I'd contact SP and they will probably send you a photocopy which is usually better.

Hi Anihana

Welcome to Talking Scot! I hope you enjoy your time with us here. We're always happy to welcome new people.

I'm currently working on a PC which is not mine and is painfully slow so someone else may have answered you by the time I get to finish this reply.

First the easy bit: Alexander's mother's maiden name was Falconer. Have you got the marriage record of Alexander's parents on 16th June 1886 in Glenbervie?. That should give you the names of both sets of his grandparents.

Where the marriage certificate is concerned, the parties were married at Nether something which looks like Auquhithie following Banns according to the Free Church. They are James Thomson, Farm Servant, Bachelor aged 26 and Betsey Pyper Farmer's daughter aged 17.

His parents are given as George Thomson, crofter, deceased and Ann Thomson m.s. Binnie (or at a pinch could be Birnie). Her's are William Pyper, Farmer and Mary Pyper m.s something beginning with C which I can't make out! The witnesses are George Thomson and George Pyper (likely to be brothers of the couple).

If you have not done so it would be worth looking for the deaths of the parents of James and Betsey as that would give you the names of their parents.

See someone else has replied. Will look at that before posting anything more.

Hi again

From Mary's death certificate on the index. This PC will not let me view the image it seems that she died in 1876 and her maiden name was Caird. I'd have a look at that one if I were you.

Just a quick message for now - at work and having a teabreak.

Gyratesmyre, Arbuthnott - Mary your guess was closer than you thought !!

Nether Auquhollie, Rickarton, Fetteresso. Just west of Stonehaven on todays maps.

Susan.

Well Susan, I've heard some weird and wonderful placenames, but that is a beauty!

Anyone know what it means? If anything?

Susan! Whatever your work is, it seems to do a good job of sharpening your brain :D I seem to remember that you made an amazing breakthrough on someone's puzzle a few weeks ago on your lunch break
Keep up the good work (or the good breaks...)
Sarah
