help to find a death

Post by Carolann » Fri Apr 27, 2007 9:18 pm

hi there

Can anyone advise where i can check to find a death for Robert Brisbane. born c1818 in Glasgow. At the 1851 census his wife Mary was a widow and their last child margaret was 2 so he must have died 1949 - 1851

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Carolann,
As you know, death records before 1855 are far from complete and what exists is not available online. I was able to finally find the 1840 Glasgow death of my ggg grandfather by looking at the cemetery microfilms at the Mitchell Library, but they are not indexed and you just have to trawl through, hoping you have found the right cemetery...
Otherwise, the Index to Burials in the Glasgow High Church-1699-1855 has been published as a CD by the Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society, as have the indexes for Barony, Govan and Gorbals. http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/projects.aspx You might find Robert there, although I didn't find the man I was looking for.
Maybe someone else will have a better idea, but that's all I know. Trawling trough the microfilms is not an easy task to ask someone else to do, unfortunately, so I would save it for a future trip to Glasgow! Unless someone else knows of another place where such records are available?

All the best,
Sarah
