Can someone tell me why a birth record (1860) would be in IGI but I can't find it in SR on SP. Here are the details.
IGI, extracted, Source call no 6035516 REGISTER:
Walker, John. birth 26 JUN 1860 Kilmarnock, Ayr. Mother Marion Walker (father not given - I think that John was illegitimate)
I then went to SP to find this birth certificate, with no luck. I searched 1858-1862, Ayr, John Walker. There were some records found but the ones I have viewed have not matched on the birth date or mother's name.
BTW - John Walker appears in the 1861 census in Kilmarnock in the household of his maternal grandmother, also a Marion Walker.
John's mother then married Louis Connan and I think that John appears in the 1871 and 1881 census living with them as "John Kirkwood". In 1871, Louis Connan is head of household and 11-yr-old John Kirkwood is "son in law". In 1881 Marion is a widow, head of household, and John Kirkwood is "son".
It looks to me from the IGI Source note that the IGI entry is extracted from birth certificates, not church records. Am I wrong?
Thanks,
Katherine

Hello Katherine,
I wonder if this is mis-indexed.
There is a James Walker born Kilmarnock 1860.
My thoughts are, if it is an extracted record from the IGI then it should appear on SP as a Statutory Record in 1860 - unless there has been a mis-index. I'm sure someone else will confirm that (or not).
Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Katherine
I'm not finding it in the index under any wildcard combinations on SP....and have tried quite a few tricks.
The image is there but I had to buy the way forward 12 from a likely looking chap born in June I plucked from the same IGI batch file

Definitely send off a contact form to GROS and ask them what the heck they've got it hiding under....and if you be very nice they might give you a few credit back
Best wishes
Jean

Thank you! You are awesome.
I will contact GROS about this one. I have definitely wasted some credits looking for this. It looks like I owe you some credits?
I can't print the SR record from your link. Am I doing something wrong?
Now I am curious; why would Marion Walker start using the surname "Kirkwood" for her son? Is this a sign that the boy's father acknowledged him, or was Marion simply seeking to avoid the notoriety of having a child with her maiden name as surname.
Thanks again,
Katherine

Hi Katherine
Curiousity got the better of me andI had to see if the image was in there or if the whole page had been skipped!! I really thought it might take fewer leaps than it did....lotta babies born in Kilmarnock that summer
And no...please no credit return necessary.....but it would be very nice to have you keep visiting TalkingScot and perhaps someday you'll be able to help someone else with a question
Hmmm....you should be able to right click and then save the image in your computer and then print it....is this what you tried??
....and please please do let us know what GROS has for a reply!
Best wishes

Hi Jean,
I sent an email to GROS. I confused them by writing the birth cert reference as "597/00 0484 forward 12" and had to send a second message explaining what that meant. So I'm awaiting another reply from them.
When I open the file with the image from your link, it opens with QuickTime. I tried right-click and then selecting "save as source", but then it tells me that I have to purchase some more software to do that. I went to one of my "previous searches" and viewed an image with no problem, so it does not seem that QuickTime has taken over my computer. Does anyone have advice on how to get the link to open with something other that QuickTime?
Thanks,
Katherine

Hmmmm.....not sure why your Quicktime it taking over for this one image. Mine opens in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer but when I right click I have a choice of opening it with another program and there is a drop down list of choices. Anyhow....if you PM me an email address I'll try shipping another route...
Best wishes

Quicktime seems to take over picture files unannounced!
Download the file by rightclick - save as ....
Then right click on the file & select "Open with" Select your usual picture program (I use irfanview - free & brilliant) and tick the box that says "Always use this program for this type of file"
Someone more technically knowledgeable than myself can probably tell you how to remove Quicktime from all the file types it likes to take over.

The question of Quicktime being installed and taking over has been raised a few times on TalkingScot. Use the search button above to seek Quicktime to see them all.
