PERTH Birth Records missing for Sarah Walker 1867

Post by lpearce » Thu May 10, 2007 9:33 pm

I have 1871,1881 and 1891 census records for Sarah Annie Walker giving her birth as 1867 in Perth. Her parents were Thomas & Sarah Walker
Yet I cannot find the birth certificate ScotlandsPeople.

Am I right in assuming that the ScotlandsPeople records are complete and accurate and therefore the 1867 date must be wrong?

Hi lpearce
There is a Sarah Walker born in Perth in 1865. Have you checked this one? Might not be the one you are looking for, of course.
Census data is often inaccurate....

Best wishes

Lesley
Thanks for the reply , yes I have looked at this.
No it's not the one I have looked at all the Sarah Walker's between 1865 and 1868 without success.

Hi Les
Her parents were Thomas & Sarah Walker
What was Sarah's own surname?

Best wishes

I cannot see Sarah in 1871, but in 1881 she is living with her grandparents as is her brother Thomas, listed as born in Jamaica. They are listed as "soldier's son and daughter"

The IGI has civil registrations at this time & I can see no trace of Sarah's birth, nor the parents marriage - so perhaps they arrived back in Scotland shortly after Sarah's birth, or perhaps she was never registered as they were travelling shortly after her birth. I don't know if there is a separate file for registration of service folks children (as per the overseas births in England). I'm sure someone else here will know any details of same.

Hi LPearce

On the GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES SUPPLEMENT , there is a Sarah A Walker born 1866 in "Perth, Scotland" .

The volume number is 40 and the page number is 133.

Unfortunately this index ( I viewed it at www.findmypast.com ) doesn't tell us who the parents were , but it could be your Sarah .

I don't know why this birth would not also be registered in the normal way in Scotland.

Nor do I know if you can order the birth cert in the normal way from the English GRO.

I am hoping there are experts out there who can explain the situation with Army births.

Hi Sally,

Thank you very much for that tip! It had never occurred to me to look for one of my missing Scottish births on the overseas register even though I suspected her father was a soldier at the time. So I looked - and lo and behold! - there it was.
Many many thanks!
You can order them at GRO in the same way as other English births, though the downside is probably that the information on them is also like English certificates.

Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

They probably left Scotland shortly after the birth & did not have time to register it before they left - if they then went to Jamaica where the next child was born, it was a distance away.

the downside is probably that the information on them is also like English certificates. The English birth certificates are somewhat more useful than their death certificates having at least both parent names (incl maiden name of mother)

Sally
I also want to thank you.
I looked at the reference you gave for Sarah and think it could well be her.
I have requested a copy from GRO.

What is even better while I was looking at the the reference further down I found a Thomas Walker born in jamaica who could well be her brother who we have been looking for.
I have also requested a copy from GRO.

Thanks for the help
Les
