Has anyone ever seen this before???

I pulled up an MC last night where the marriage took place in 1863, "After Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland" and was surprised to see the word "Protestant" written after the names of the bride and groom and also both sets of their parents.

I've never seen that before...anyone know why that would be written?

The other couple on the page don't have it and they were married "After Banns according the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland".

Was their a difference between the "Established Church of Scotland" and the "Church of Scotland"?

If you google Scotlands churches after the 1700's you will find quite a lot of information on the Church structure, much more complicated than I thought.

The marriage took place in the Parish of St. Ninians in the County of Stirling.

Yes, I agree that there is a lot to read on the Church of Scotland...very invovled and too much for me to remember, but I haven't come across a reason why Protestant would be written on the MC.
