I have a relative died 1901 in Laid, Parish of Durness, age 45, cause of death unknown No medical Attendant.
Was it normal to register this death without any inquiry into the cause.
She died 28th March and the death was registered by her husband at Sangmore on the 12th April

I too have this with a couple of people, I think I may have asked something similar before on here. I can't remember what thread it was, sorry.

If there was nothing suspicious about the death, then quite normal for there not to be any reference to the local procurator fiscal, - even when there was "No Medical Attendant", - so no RCE.
In the case of the 45 year old above, I'd suspect that there was a long standing illness which, being a rural parish, a lot of people knew about.
The "no medical attendant" bit doesn't mean that a doctor hadn't seen the person concerned, albeit some weeks or months previously, only that no doctor had been in attendance in connection with an illness in the period immediately before and then right up to the date of the death.

Thanks Andy and David,
I am always hoping to find an extra bit of information.
She was eleven years older than her husband, he was only 20 when they married. I thought he might have bumped her off in favour of a young blonde.
Apparently not as he never seems to have remarried although he lived until he was 80. "Maybe Once bitten, twice shy"
Too much imagination me.
