I would appreciate help reading this 1923 MC, please?

Hi everyone,
I am unable to read all of this one. I am interested in the 2nd marriage: David Crookston & Elizabeth King. I can't decipher where it took place? I have no idea what her occupation might be? I think his usual residence is Egypt, but where? Not sure of his parents, either? Thanks, alysone

Hi Alysone
I'm seeing:
The place of marriage is Grand Hotel, Glasgow

Her occupation: I'll work on that one!

His Us. Res. does look like Egypt - I wonder if his occupation might give some clues as to where - mining engineer? Place might start with a G.....

His parents: William Crookston, Railway Company's Treasurer(deceased)
Jane Crookston m.s. McCrindle? (but not 100% convinced on that one!)

Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. Am I right in seeing that he is 35, she is 29? I half-thought he was listed as 85, but dismissed that as unlikley - but hey, I might be wrong!

All the best,

PS. On seeing Lesley's reply above and going back to the certificate, he could well be 85.

Hi All

I have tried to clean the image in Paint Shop Pro without much success :!:

It looks to me like his age is probably 85 but possibly 55 :?:

Could Elizabeth's occupation be 'Certificated Teacher' :?:

I hesitated but my first guess was 85, also?

Hi and grateful thanks to all,
Could he really be 85? Now therein lies a tale, if so!?
I actually was after the certificate below (in my search results) and misjudged my clicking finger. However, in the knowledge that all Crookstons are interesting to the like of pinkshoes, myself and others, I didn't regret the credits. Now, I am so intrigued I want to place these people. alysone

Egypt, not East Lothian?

Hi again,
Thanks Andrew on the Egypt link.
Safaniya can be found about 100 miles south of Cairo (Al Quahira).
See http://www.fallingrain.com/world/EG/18/Safaniyah.html
I was just whining to pinkshoes yesterday that we seem to have an over- abundance of miners and little else, these days in our Crookston quest. Be careful what you wish for?!
If he is 85 surely it would say "retired mining engineer"? :? alysone

Hi Alysone:

Here's my reading:

1923 on the First of June at *St. David Hotel, Glasgow. After Banns according to the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland.

David Crookston, 35, Mining Engineer (Bachelor)
Saf___, Egypt
William Crookston, Railway Company’s Treasurer (deceased)
Jeanie Crookston, M. S. McClindle

Elizabeth King, 29, Certificated Teacher (Spinster)
“Arduith”, Lowan____, Hamilton
Harvey King, Colliery Forman
Margaret King, M.S. McFarlane

Witnesses: John MacKenzie, 16 Cambridge Gardens, Edinburgh / Alice King, “Arduith”, Hamilton

Unsure of David's age, I checked on SP for likely match in 1881 census. 177 Crookston entries in total.
9 David Crookston entries - only 1 aged 1 - 4 years
1 Jeanie Crookston entry
13 William Crookston entries

Perhaps you could narrow down his age through the census - he won't be hard to spot, being born in Egypt. 3 remaining SP credits wouldn't allow a peek at Jeanie Crookston

Frances
*Grand Hotel, rather than St. David Hotel, revision not included in final posting :(

No census check required, - just do a crosscheck search for the marriage of William CROOKSTON and Jessie McCRINDLE !, - 1882 in Dennistoun, - so 85 as an age for David appears unlikely, and even less so on looking for David's birth, - 07Feb1885, also in Dennistoun, so he was actually 38 on the day of his marriage, - wee bit of massaging there possibly to get closer to 29 :?:   , except he was actually an honest man, - look very closely at the "5" and you'll see the right sloping diagonal stroke that means that it's really an "8" [5 cups]

David

PS Who said that he was born in Egypt :?:

As David's age had already been questioned, and as I doubted my interpretation of his mother's maiden surname, I made the leap to double checking the census. I didn't include my thought process in the post, so don't know how I expected anyone to make that leap with me?

Born in Egypt? Too many hours in the flowerbeds in the heat, with all the blood rushing to my knees and not my head :?:

Am I missing something here?

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the good advice. I went after the Wm Crookston/Jessie McCrindle MC on SP. I have just posted to the gallery what came in response. Either, I, too have heat stroke or they gave me the wrong certificate? I am quite new at SP and this has never happened to me. Is it possible to claim the credits if it is the wrongone? Puzzled, I am even more now. :?: alysone
