Helen Kerr (nee Fisher) DC upped to Gallery.....

Post by Dennis » Sat Jun 04, 2005 5:30 am

Hi. I've upped a DC for a Helen Kerr (nee Fisher) for whom I cannot read what is written between her married name and the name of her husband Charles Kerr. I also don't recognize the maiden name of her mom Mary.

Hi Dennis,

My interpretation of these two sections of the certificate are:
  • Helen Kerr
    Wife of an Iron Miner
    Married to Charles Kerr
and
  • Mary Fisher
    ms. Corrochan
There is one entry on the online IGI which is a close match, but if it is her, it presents you with another question regarding the mother's name.
  • HELEN FISHER - Christening: 01 APR 1832 Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew
Parents: JAMES FISHER and MARY MCDONALD
All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew. Yes it looks like wife of Iron Miner:) However, that mom's maiden name is still baffling me.

It looked to me like Conochan. Don't know if that helps any.

Just had a thought. Mary's maiden name seems to be puzzling you, not just because it's difficult to read. Do you have other info which gives another m.s?

I see her husband is deceased. Could she have married again and Charles Kerr confused her maiden name with her new married name. Just a thought.

All the best

Hi. I've posted a contact to SP to see if anyone there can decipher the name. I've exhausted all the suggestions offered and am too stubborn to let it go. Meantime I'll go find another line that I can add to the 169 surnames I have now 8)

Dennis

I tend to go for Corrochan as her maiden name, it looks much more like "rr" than an "na".

Poor woman must have had a rough time during birth of her child and paid the price "Debility after childbirth - 10Weeks as Certified by David Taylor MD" must have been terrible.

Hi Stew. I'm beginning to think I'll need an 1851 census search on her husband since he was deceased by 1861 and his daughter helen was not yet married.

The writing on the certificate is very clear.

Wife of an Iron Miner married to Charles Kerr and the LIVING mother's name is written Conochan. So you should be able to track down the death cert if she was in Scotland. There could be a number of ways of spelling Conochan.

By the way there are many other examples of a double "R" on the page Orr in the entry above, "maRRied" in her own, KeRR in her own.

None of these are formed in the same way as the N in Conachan.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
