I understand that if all records state where born and if it just says Ireland there is not much chance of finding out any more info. I used to get excited when opening a birth cert or census, sure that one of them would say the place - but no luck
Therefore for my Flannigan line i can only post the names when they arrived in Glasgow and hope maybe someone knows where in Ireland the names originated.
They are
FLANNIGAN CAIRNAN PORTEOUS
end of line?

Hi Crayspond
You might find some sites of use in our Irish section here:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5555
Some of them are pay-per-view, a bit like Scotlands People, but of course it is difficult to know where to start if you don't know where in Ireland.
The only thing I can think of is that if any of them applied for poor relief, they might have stated at that point where in Ireland they were from.
A free surname search can be conducted here:
http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/ which might give you some idea of possible locations, though after that they want you to pay!
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: end of line?
If they applied at any time for poor relief, it's possible that any poor relief record may give more info on the place of birth in Ireland.crayspond wrote:I understand that if all records state where born and if it just says Ireland there is not much chance of finding out any more info. PS Check every census, - it's often the case that one gives more info than the others.......

Hi Crayspond,
If they married in Ireland and then had some children in Scotland, you might be lucky in finding out which county they came from. I think people were required to state date and place of marriage on birth registrations of children in 1855 registrations and then after 1862 (someone please correct this if not right). I have found a number of my Irish family's county of origin that way.

Hi to all and thanks for replying.
How do you go about looking to see if they applied for poor relief?
Earliest census record i have is 1881 and birthplace is states 'Ireland" only.
Flannigans' James, Ann and son Thomas (also lodger Mary Passmore) in 34 Rose St ,Govan,Lanark in 1881.
Ann died 1882 (no mention of birthplace) on cert.
Thomas married Bridget Devine (my gt grandmother) in 1882 (again no mention of birthplace).
I have Thos and Bridget in 1891 (and place of birth again only Ireland). (Couldn't find James and Ann in that year)
In 1901 i have Thomas and family (thanks to your help) census again shows him only born Ireland.
So it is a bit of a dead end regarding where in Ireland. Any suggestions gratefully received.
