Church Marriages

Post by mcblondie » Mon Jul 16, 2007 1:26 pm

Can anyone tell me if you are allowed to go to Churches/Chapels and request t see the Marriage registers? Also do you know if the extracts that we download on SP is all the information the church has? Basically what i'm asking is if i go to St. Joseph's in Blantyre and ask to see the register for 1915, am i only going to see what they already have on SP or does the church have more info.

I purchased my grandparents marriage cert after finding the extract on SP, but when i went to the registrars office the girl who served me couldn't make out the names and had to ask me how to spell them!!! but it now means that i only have what i think the names were and not exactly what was on the certificates :(

Hi Katie:

I don't have the answer about St. Joseph's Parish, but would this site be of any help? Seems to be no reference to cost, if you go to do the search yourself.

I was under the impression that all you got from the registrar was an official version of what you get on SP…. typed onto fancy paper.
The names etc. are as the registrar sees them.

If you have downloaded the original from SP why not post it here and I’m sure you’ll get some deciphering help from the good people on TS.

Marriage Cert

Post by mcblondie » Fri Jul 20, 2007 1:32 pm

I've uploaded a copy of grandparents marriage cert, (awaiting approval)

I have my g. grandmothers m.s. as Milunas, but in Lithuania female surnames usually end differently than the male version. e.g. a married female with the name Milunas would be Miluniene, if she is single it would be Miluniate or Miluniute. Due to the fact the witnesses at the wedding are both scottish and there are no Lithuanian witnesses i guess the registrar only wrote down what he heard? Any other opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Katie

Hi Katie

It looks a lot like Milunas to me. I would guess that the grammar of Lithuanian surnames was well beyond the registrar. Either that or the family had long since given up trying to explain different forms of the surname and just opted for giving the straightforward version.

Church Marriages

Hi

The information on parish marriage registers gives much the same information as is on the marriage register. Before 1860 they would also say where the couple came from if they did not belong to the parish, but this had stopped by the mid 60's. There are copies of catholic parish registers in the National Archives which are available as well as the records in the parish.

St Joseph's in 1915 would be under the Archdioces of Glasgow but since 1948 it transferred to the newly created Diocese of Motherwell. The parish address is:

St Joseph's
Mayberry Place,
Blantyre
G72 9DA

(01698) 823896
E-mail: infor@sjblantyre.org
Web: www.sjblantyre.org

I e-mailed a parish in Stirling and the priest e-mailed back the information, it is worth a try.
