Duncan Campbell of Argyll - death?

Post by cadmium » Sat Aug 11, 2007 4:01 pm

If anyone has spare time could they help me with this death? I'm having trouble finding it, would be most grateful.

Duncan CAMPBELL

born Glassary or Lochgilphead, Argyll
Normally Ploughman, once described as Farm Servant
b. 1840 "Duncan, son lawful to John Campbell and Janet Macvicar was born 27th Nov 1940 and" (it goes to next person after AND, no mention of baptism?)
m. 1865 to Catherine Crawford

Found the wife fine. His wife died in Dunoon, 1924 and was not listed as a Widow at the time. At the time of his son's marriage in 1919 he was not listed as deceased. Therefore I assumed he would have died between 1919/1924 and 1946 (when his son died).

I haven't been able to find death certs with his parents or wife. They could be registered by one of his nine children (John, James, Alexander, Duncan, Jessie, Archibald, Mary, Isabella, Colin). But I haven't found any of these names. He lived most of his life in Argyll.

Any info or help would be much appreciated, I'm hitting brick walls again. :)

Hi Miko,

I take it the dates you gave above are out by 100 years, and should be born 1840, and married 1865.

There is a positive sighting of him in the 1901 census with his wife and four of the children in Lochgilphead (village), Glassary parish.

All the best,

AndrewP

Whoops! You're right, I meant 1840/65. Found the Census but that's the last trace of him, other than not being named as deceased in 1919. Hmm...

Your man died in Barrhead in 1932. Hint: if you can't find someone from Argyll dying in Argyll always look for them in the Glasgow area.

I got him - I guess I didn't expect him to live so long! His son and his grandchild on my line both died at 60, so was a bit of a surprise that he lived to 88/92. :) Thanks for your help and tips.

Maybe Mother or Father came from Eastwood-most women went to their Mothers for their first confinement but it would make more sense that he was born in ARgyll but for some reason taken to Eastwood for the christening-maybe even done twice???

Hello Joette

You may be right about the mother returning home for the confinement, the information I posted doesnt mention a christening (even though it is on "header" ) it only mentions his birth date. Perhaps I should have edited the word christening after his name. :D

Perhaps he was registered in two parishes as you suggested. :D

I have certainly had births registered twice where the daughter has returned home for the birth to her parents home & I even have one where the daughter was registered twice-once where the parents normal home was & where he was posted at Glencorse Barracks-her Mother lived in Penicuik so maybe it's there three times!!
Maybe they wanted to have the baby's birth acknowledged in the Parish they were/would be living or even that who ever was keeping the Records included it to keep things"Tidy"??
