Dunlop parish in Ayrshire, 1853

Post by Mo-anne » Sat Aug 25, 2007 9:09 am

Birth certificate for Sarah Johnstone Wood , 1853, after her father's name are the words " Old Gale.....(indeciperable) For the other entries on the page any entries after the father's name are locations so I assume this is where he lived. Is there anyway I could find out if there was an area/village/ large house in the parish at this time.

Thanks

Hi Mo-anne,

Go to http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... _list.html

and select Sheet 22 - Kilmarnock

On that map, Dunlop is the orange coloured parish near the top centre.

I have not (yet) found Old Gale..., but is this one a possibility?

Click a few times on the south-east corner of that until the place names become legible. You should find Gameshill there. Does that look like the place name you have seen on the 1853 birth record?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi again Mo-anne,

Following Annette's reply above, it is probable that Dunlop Stables were the stables at Dunlop House, just across the parish boundary into Stewarton parish (yellow-coloured on the 1890s map given above).

All the best,

There is a Richard Wood age 14 on the 1841 Census - again courtesy of FREECEN - living in the right place.

Thanks for this - I shall study this map in detail later - but no, it is definitely not Game, it's clearly Old Gale... or possibily Gate ..(if the writer forgot to cross the t.

It's Old Gatehouse, I'm pretty sure.

Thanks for this wealth of info about Richard Wood - I'm a novice to this and much appreciate all these suggestions and leads.
