Robert Storer Young

Post by Beckenham1 » Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:55 pm

Robert Storer Young was a noted Solicitor and historian of Kinross. His firm was Robert S. Young & Son. He died in 1952 at the age of 84. His usual residence at the time was Duncroft in Kinross. Robert wrote several books about the people of Kinross-shire which have been published.

I'm looking for a copy of one such named:

"Balgedie, 1674-1852" by Robert S. Young, F.S.A.(Scotland), Published 1952
Author YOUNG, ROBERT.

The full title is BALGEDIE AND DISTRICT LOCAL AND FAMILY GLEANINGS 1674-1852 [HARDBACK].
Author Young R S
Bib Id 232571
Subject YOUNG FAMILY
KINNESSWOOD
KINROSSSHIRE

It's on the shelf at 941.34 at the the AK Bell Library in Perth, but I cant get there and the library wont allow it to leave Perth.

Does anyone know how I can get a copy?
Regards, Jim

Hello Jim,

If it's not a reference only copy you can borrow it using the inter library loan service. Go to your local library and they will organise it and tell you how much it will cost.

Hi Jim
Have you tried Amazon? http://www.amazon.co.uk Second hand copies of books can often be picked up there. Alternatively Abe Books http://www.abebooks.co.uk are always worth a try, and both are worth checking back regularly - you never know when something might suddenly become available ...but Annette's suggestion is probably the cheaper one!

Googlebooks is also a good place to try for those older books which are out of copyright.

or the internet archive at

Best wishes

Hello Jim,

If you’re looking for old books don’t forget to have an occasional look at Ebay. A few months ago I bought a book of poems by my GGGUncle that was published in 1823. It was the only copy for sale on the Planet, first and only edition, and in quite good condition, but with the spine repaired with fabric tape. Napoleon’s nephew had a copy of this book in his library.

Inside the front cover, pasted along one edge, was a photocopy of an engraving of the author that had obviously been copied from something very old. It beat my next oldest identified family picture by about 50 years.

The book is all in Welsh, and I can’t understand a word of it, but who’s complaining, it only cost me about £12 including air mail postage from the UK.

All the best,
Alan
