Hi to all at TS,

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions or is better at working their way round Familysearch than i am !

I am trying to find out who was the 3rd child of the below couple John Rankin and Ann Ferguson - It states child 3 next to William Rankin but i have searched on SP and familysearch to know avail.

Just looking for any suggestions - i have both the above birth certs but they are very sparse except for both being born in Barony and also their marriage cert is also Barony. I am trying to go further back for John and Ann but can see no George Rankin as a father to any John Rankin c1785 - 1795.
Any ideas !

I've checked Family Search for children of John Rankin and Ann Ferguson. It shows 5 records in total - but they refer to the two children you have listed.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say 'IT states child 3 next to William Rankin but i have searched on SP and familysearch to know avail'.

Did you actually come up with only 3 records on Family Search? I wasn't able to get only 3 records there.

Did you look at the record that was labelled 1 ? to see if that was actually a child born to Ann Ferguson and John Rankin. Sometimes Family Search throws up some non-related records.

Hi Ailsa,
Since their marriage was on 25 July 1810, just 3 months before the birth of George, one would suppose that he was child no. 1 and that the second child was between 1810-1815. Not necessarily so, of course, but it's a working assumption!

The second child may well have been stillborn, or died before christening. Since the OPRs are mostly christening, rather than birth records, that child may well not show up in them at all Have you tried looking at the burials for that time frame?

On the SP search it states next to the birth of William that this was the 3rd recorded birth - which would indicate that a 3rd child was recorded. I did wonder if that would include a child that had died in childbirth. Thanks for the help.

Hi Ailsa,
I'm well and hope you are also My first thought, looking at that long list, was wouldn't it be nice if you could just scroll through the film! Otherwise... I suppose the no-name one would fit with a stillborn child (and fits conveniently in the middle of the other two children's births). Are the second names on the line parent names? If so, you can at least reject the ones with father James or Alexander, etc. Those without parents names are likely to be adults, so you can toss them as well.

Of those with father John we have two equally possible:

It would be nice if you knew whether either John or Ann had a mother named Elizabeth...

Anyway, I would start by narrowing it down to those three (the no-name and the two with father John).
