Daniel McDonald and Margaret Thomson

Post by frances » Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:20 pm

I am trying to find the Birth of Daniel McDonald who according to the 1871 census would have been born C 1845 in Duirinish. He married Margaret Thomson on the 4th June 1867 in Whitekirk. His parents were given as Malcolm Mcdonald and Marion McDonald. His subsequent death in 1888 gives his mother as Marion McSween. On his death certificate his age is given as 40 .

Similarily I can find no record for the birth of Margaret Thomson. On her MC to Daniel her age is given as 20 and according to the 1871 census her birth place is given as Dirleton. Her DC in 1922 gives her age as 75 and her parents as George Thomson and Jessie Howden.

I have found Margaret on the 1911 census for Haddington aged 60 .

Any help much appreciated :)

Doesn't look as though either family were members of the established church as only children who were born after 1855 can be found at the IGI. Remember to use Janet as well as Jessie when searching for the Thomsons.

Have you tried the OPRs or Catholic records at SP?

Here is Margaret and family in 1851 at Dirleton -

George Thomson 27 born Ormiston
Janet Thomson 22 born Glasdsmuir
Margaret Thomson 3 born Dirleton
John Thomson 1
Euphemia Thomson 1
Fanny Miller 24
Christina Archibald 22

This looks like Daniel (Donald) and family in 1851 at Duirinish -

Malcolm Macdonald 41 born Duirinish
Marion Macdonald 41 born Duirinish
Catherine Macdonald 16
Ann Macdonald 12
Donald Macdonald 8 born Duirinish
Angus Macdonald 6
William Macdonald 4
Murdoch Macdonald 1

Annette

Hi Frances
He married Margaret Thomson on the 4th June 1867 in Whitekirk.
The marriage may give you some clues - what church is mentioned in the second column? The wording is usually something along the lines of "according to the forms of the ______ church"
At least that may narrow your searching down to a specific church and give a bit of focus for further reserach.

Best wishes
Lesley
