Ancestry.co.uk.....

Post by Clydesdale » Mon Jan 30, 2006 9:57 pm

I was thinking of subscribing to Ancestry but am a bit hesitant as there doesn't seem to be much Scotland information available, but I won't find out until I join! Has anyone else made a subscription - and is it worth doing please?

Hello Clydesdale and Welcome!

In response to your question...from a US distance perspective...for only interests in Scotland?...don't waste your money. You'll need all that and more to keep buying those SP credits! If you have need of some research in England though it is handy to have....and of course US census data too. But just for Scotland? imho..... [-(

Best wishes
Jean

You can buy credits on Ancestry for a 48 hour period which is worth doing first if you want to look around. If you do decide to take out a quartlerly or yearly subscription then be careful because as I found out to my cost they automatically rebill you without asking you as the end of your subscription.

I have only ever used it for the English parts of my tree. I've never found anything relating to my Scottish side on there.

Hello Clydesdale

You could always use the 2 week free trial to see if it will be of use to you and exactly what they do have on it. :?:

EDIT ...Reading Rabs post reminded me to say make a note of the phone number to cancel :!: do it that way and you know its definitly done

Hi Tracey
Yeah, but...the 2 week "free" trial requires you to give them your credit card details as far as I remember. I picked a quiet weekend and went for the 48hr access (Ok, credit card details also required!!) and bashed through as much of the English info that I could at the time - I had a long list prepared! It worked out to be pretty good value especially if there were no interruptions!

There was a very small amount of Scottish info (Midlothian I seem to remember) but not worth the money if it was Scottish stuff you were looking for. I'd only meandered off once I'd run out of my list of English look ups!

I'd stick to SP for Scottish research!
Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you so much for all the information. I am especially grateful to know about the automatic billing - what a cheek to renew it automatically. I think the idea of buying a limited access seems to be the best way forward. I have found only ancestor one so far who came from England. A problem seems to be that as they were mostly seamen, and fisherman - they moved around quite a bit, so I can't rule out that those who seem to have disappeared, actually moved south and I can hopefully find them on Ancestry.
Cheers to you all :D

How do you manage to do that more than once? I thought they clocked you if it was the same email address?

er....I'll understand completely if you remain quiet on this one

Hello all

I never ever sign up for anything that requires me to lodge my credit card detail for a "free trial" and I mean never.

Been caught a couple of times with "automatic" billing, hence again I dont like them. Some of these organisations seem to think it is a free for all, and they can take out the money when it suits them.

My young brother had an organisation take out his monthly payment one day and then took it out again the next week.

I agree as i was caught with .com and recently so was a family member as a result of that i now print out the details and make a note in my diary of the dates but i have no problems with .co.uk besides its the only real option most people have of finding English ancestors so not much choice really
