Displaying Your Tree

Just wondering how do you all display your tree?

In wall charts or all on computer?

I was thinking of doing a wall chart but I do not know where to go to get one made up.

I've not got far enough to even consider having one done professionally yet. I have googled to find out likely costs, and it ain't cheap

There is also the horrible thought that I might get one done and then find that I'd got a bit of it all wrong

At the moment I just print it out in Family Tree, sellotape the pages together (and sometimes myself to the pages) and pin it on the wall. I use it to write new stuff on and leave wee notes to myself. I print out a new one only when I have put all the handwritten stuff into FT.

I know I'd have to be VERY confident about my information before I'd go to the expense of having a posh one done.

I seem to be constantly updating my tree and there never seems to be an end date. For this reason I've never tried to print off a complete tree nor looked into. Mostly I use FTM to create PDFs for parts of the tree I need to look at or want to distribute.

It would be nice one day to have my full tree set out- that day never seems to come though.

I used to only print out sections as well, Rab. But, after I printed out the whole thing by mistake initially, I have found that seeing the "Big Picture" can be quite helpful.

When I write in new information in red pen I can see immediately where I am making progress (and where I'm not, unfortunately

).

I think on a print-out, it all depends on how much info you want to include for each person/generation.

I can generate an A3+ sized version of my tree (I've obviously got an A3+ printer!) and depending on which way I organise the details, can get at least 8 generations arranging them portrait style - this includes dates of birth, marriage and death and anything else I can squueze in.

I must agree that it makes all the difference seeing it 'in reality' and that sometimes glaring errors show up that you didn't notice before . . . not forgetting the fact that you can write wee notes all over it too!!

I print off sections because I want to look at siblings etc too but now I am going to pin it up and get the red pen out. Good idea !

Very true! Although I have entered all my folks siblings in FT, I don't include them in the printout. However, I keep Birth, Marriage and Death items, including those that are blank to "red ink" them in as I get them. This last printout also includes place of burial, just for my own reference, as I am trying to pin down some of these.

I have also discovered that it helps to uncheck the "centre in page" option which can help to reduce the white area around the tree. (Why waste paper on empty space?).

On a personal note; After that first mistake when I printed out the whole thing, I must tell you it is quite a humbling experience to stand back and look at your ancestry. Because I am as interested in the way they lived as I am in BMD dates, I can look at each person (because they are now real people to me) and know some of what their lives were like.

I have a lot to live up to!

Hi Mary,

I know what you mean about wanting to know how our ancestors lved.

One little addition I made way back when I first started plotting out my tree was, added the reigning monarchy down one side and other events (e.g. wars) down the other side.

It doesn't half make you realise what was going on in our wee world way back when!
