Cathcart – Old Church Cemetery.

Post by Alan SHARP » Wed Oct 13, 2010 9:17 pm

Greetings.

The Glasgow University Archaeological Society are in the process of doing a detailed survey of this cemetery. The Church I believe was built in 1831, and is now derelict, with a small cemetery in the grounds. This is not the large Cathcart Cemetery.

Interested in their findings, I sent off an email to the address at the bottom of the advisory sign, they have placed at the site of the old church. The reply I have received, in part reads:-

................................ “With regard to your queries, we did indeed
undertake an extensive archaeological survey of the graveyard including
recording the extant memorials. We did not however find any memorials
or references to any Sharp's or Sharpe's (indeed of any spellings) during
our work. I cannot say for certain that there never were any however as
a very large number of memorials have been lost either under the turf
and some, regrettably, broken by vandals. Should any relevant tomb(s)
become apparent during our continued analysis of the recorded data I
will endeavour to let you know.

Many thanks for your interest. Should you require more information, please
get in touch and again, .....................................”.

Yours sincerely,

Peta Glew

The email address I used was 0911253g AT student.gla.ac.uk Petra appears to welcome enquiries, but as I don’t have her permission to use the contact details on her reply to me, I’m prepared to attempt contact should someone have a request for the Archaeologists, but not have any luck with the above student email address.

Thanks Lesley, for picking up my oversight. Thought readers might like to know that the survey has created a resource, that the Society is prepared to share. Alan.
