Another Puzzle.....

Post by Ted » Wed Sep 14, 2005 5:53 pm

Hi Everyone

I could really do with some help with another dilemma of mine. I have a proven line to my GG Grandpa James Allan, who died in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire on 10 Nov 1869 (I have the cert) - his parents noted as Alexander Allan, Innkeeper & Mary Simpson - both deceased. James was married to Jane Aitken - she died 28 Nov 1883 in Inveruire. Her death cert has no details of parents. I cannot trace their marriage anywhere (assuming they were married).

Jane is shown on 1851 census in Inverurie age 43 born Udny
She is also marked on 1861 Census in Inverurie aged 56 born in Udny
She is marked on 1871 Census in Inverurie aged 61 born in Udny
1881 Census has her in Huntly aged 75 born Udny (I have other evidence to confirm it is the same person on all 4). One problem is I can find no trace of her birth in Udny on any combination of the ages back to birth dates.

Next problem is James himself - he is marked on 1851 census in Inverurie age 42 Bn Peterhead and on 1861 census in Inverurie age 58 born Peterhead. I have checked Peterhead from 1805 - 1820 - no Allan kids either sex born there between those times.

They had a bundle of kids - 3 in Chapel of Garioch and 4 in Inverurie between 1831 and 1851 but all before stat register so no marriage details etc.

Does anyone have any suggstions where to go next for info on James and Jane

Best regards

Ted

Hi Ted

This one has been sitting for a while. I looked at it once and put it away and lost any notes I had made. Just now I thought I'd give it another look. You're right in that you can't get marriage details of the parents from a child's BC prior to 1861. And since Jane's DC does not contain details of her parents then you are pretty much at a end with her.....unless you happen to know if she had any siblings. Likewise with a search for an ALLAN birth in Peterhead. A look at the 1881 census for any ALLAN b. in Peterhead reveals there likely were some during the time period you seek.....(if these folks were not making up their ages and birth places!)

Here is a list of families containing ALLAN folk living in the Higlands during 1881 census that state they were born in Peterhead around about that time.....

While it probably won't lead you to the marriage of James and Jane it could be worthwhile to examine the 1851 or 1861 census microfilms for Peterhead or Inverurie for other ALLAN familes in the hopes of unraveling some siblings for James. It would be tedius but it could fatten up your tree! :D

..............and a really desperate stab in the dark gives you any ALLAN and Innkeeper in Aberdeen from the Highlands disk 1881....

Hello Jean

Thanks lots for your time on this - gives me a bit to go on. I did have one line to follow as I am not too convinced about the Peterhaed angle (yet). On SP I found a James Allan birth in 1811 - at Gairloch - fair bit west from Aberdeen - parents were Alexander Allan and Mary Chisholm - I got the page from the OPR - these Allan's were the only non 'Mc' names on the page - Alexander's occupation given as Schoolmaster. I cannot find any further trace of them after that OPR entry as I have no access to 1841 / 51 census - can you suggest where I could look?

Truly grateful for your help

Hello Ted

What were James and Jane's children's given names? If they appear to follow the Scottish naming pattern, that could give possible parents's names for Jane, to follow up.

Then again!!!!!!

Best wishes

Hello Catriona

(Or dare I say Selkirk Craw ???)

Thanks lots for you help - I must say that TS is the only forum that makes you feel at home and has a real friendly atmosphere - everyone is so helpful - even to beginner idiots like me !!

Anyway enough crawling:-

James & Jane had children as follows:-

On 1841 Census - Inverurie, Aberdeenshire

Alexander Allan - aged 10 - no further details

James Allan - on IGI as James Allan b 22/1/1826 - Chapel of Garioch

Elisa Allan - on IGI as Elisabeth Mearns Allan b 31/5/1838 - Chapel of Garioch - mothers name as Jane Arthur ( I suspect the Arthur to be a mis-transcritpion - might be Aitken)

Jean Allan b 18/12/1840 - Inverurie - I have the OPR extract to confirm this one.

Later from IGI I have:-

William Allan b 18/1/1846 - Inverurie - I have OPR / BMD certs for him and his decendants

John Clark Allan b 4/3/1849 - Inverurie - I have OPR / BMD certs for him and his decendants

Robert Allan (my G Grandfather) b 3/1/1852 - Inverurie ( I have OPR / BMD and lots on this line from then up to current times)

I have traced & confirmed William / John Clark / Robert - & possibly Alexander - but no clues yet to James / Elisabeth or Jean

help !!

Best regards & hope someone can help or give me a clue

Hi Ted

You probably already know that the response to "Selkirk Craw" is to yell back "Dirty Galae"!!! :D

Haven't a clue if there is a link up somewhere. Will leave that to the experts. I was however interested to note that Eliza's mother was noted as Jane ARTHUR.

The IGI has a mariage between a Jean AIKIN and a George ARTHUR, in UDNY on 20 November 1789.

Have you looked at Hugh Wallis site? You'll find a number of the Udny Aikin/Aiken there.

Sometimes searching parallel lines can be useful.

All the best for your research

Hi Catriona

Thanks for your efforts - I've been considering for a while now if Jane Aitken's name was maybe Arthur - with your help I'm now following a positive lead on a family in Udny that may fit.

PS sun shining on Gala today as usual - big gloomy cloud above Selkirk

Best regards

Hi Ted

Thought about you last week as I drove along Scott Street.

Not much has changed. The nicest thing about Galae is still the road to Selkirk.

:D

All the best

On a similar vein, as my west coast father said about Edinburgh where he lived for thirty years, "its a good place to come from". :)

Having just spent a week working in the Faeroe Islands, with the wind never dropping below force 8, and heavy horizontal rain to boot, I was tempted to echo his sentiments; the inhabitants are great though! The infamous Icelandic weather seemed marvelous on my return.
