Tom Snailum

I have found a entry in the Edinburgh Post office directory for a Mr Tom Snailum. In the 1911/12 edition he is listed as a engineer, (his father also Thomas was the chief engineer of the infirmary)
in the 1928/9 edition he is listed as JP, where would I look to find information of his career, when was he elected to JP ?

SNAILUM—At 54 Spottiswoode Street, EDINBURGH, on 17th June 1946, TOM SNAILUM, J.P. Funeral on Thursday, 20th June, at Crematorium, Warriston Road, where a service will be held at 2.30 p.m., to which all friends are invited. (No mourning, no flowers.)

thanks for that information, how would I find out who attended the cremation, would there have been a report for that in the papers?

Hello David,

I think it would be a fairly rare event to find a list of mourners in the Scotsman, unless it was a funeral for someone considered very important. I was hoping to find an obituary for him in that newspaper but there’s not a sign of one. Hope you get a response from the High Constables.

For Edinburgh 1940s the Scotsman is the only one online that I’m aware of. There are probably heaps of other Edinburgh newspapers, unless the Scotsman bought up all the competition.

Here’s the microfilmed list for Scotland but a lot of that would be 19th century stuff. You would have to check the catalogue to see what period is covered. Someone local may have a better idea. http://www.nls.uk/about-us/working-with ... titles.cfm
