Hi Maureen
Did anyone take you up on this? Wonder if there might be a trade directory or some such for the period and area?

Here's a link to a photo of A Gardner & Son, Jamaica Street, Glasgow, mentioned above.
Have searched on-line and can't find a street/trade directory for 1950s/60s - lots for the 1800s
http://www.artandarchitecture.org.uk/im ... 30fc6.html
Haven't been able to find anything for the Partick reference.

Re: Gardener/Gardiner & Leighton.....
Hi Maureen, just came across your post and can give you some information about Gardener & Leighton, I served my apprenticeship as a carpet fitter/ upholsterer, I started with them in September 1969, and left them to move to Fife in 1977. When I started there was no Gardener I don't know why it was called Gardener & Leighton I probably asked and was told but I can't remember. There was David Leighton the Father and Ivor Leighton the son. David was married to Lily and Ivor was married to Natalie, They had three premises when I started, one in Busby road, Busby and two in Cathcart Glasgow. 223 Clarkston road and 254 Clarkston road. I worked with two french polishers Mary (can't remember her surname), who worked at 223 Clarkston road and Tillie (Matilda) Hutton, who worked at the Busby shop and shared her birthday with me on 14th December. They bought the old Baptist church at 5 Arthur street, Busby and moved all upholstery work up there around 1970-71 I think and closed the 254 shop.

Hello hwm,
The people you name are all my family.
The descendants of Ivor ,live here in New Zealand near me,hence the posting here as we have never been able to establish who the Gardiner was.
I think he may have been a previous owner of the business.
Happy birthday next week and a Merry Christmas.
Cheers,
