Hi all,
I'm trying to find out about a John Strathie who was named as the father of Eliz. Clark b1873, Polmont, she was the illegitimate child of Margaret Clark.
All I have on the RCE is his name, John Strathie a ploughman from Overtown in the parish of Polmont, but can't seem to find him anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you
Sandra

Re: RCE John Strathie
There aren't too many of that name about.
1891 census does have a John Strathie in Grangemouth aged 39 which would make him about 20 when she was born.
No sign of him in 1871 , just an 11 year old at Muiravonside .
I wonder if his name was misscribed or that's him and his age is missindexed?
Funnily my husband mentioned recently that he was at school with a girl called Strathie, in the Falkirk Braes area.

Re: RCE John Strathie
Thats what I found, not many Strathie's especially Johns.
Margaret was a Domestic servant, she already had a illegitimate son John b1870, then Elizabeth b1873, could it be she worked for John Srathie?

Re: RCE John Strathie
There is a marriage in December 1874 at Polmont between a John Strathie and Jane Sharp that might be worth a look for his address and occupation.
I think this is Jane with family in 1881 at Bathgate but unfortunately John isn't with them.
Jane Strathie 28 born Polmont
Mary Strathie 6
John Strathie 3
Janet Strathie 2
Jane Strathie 4 M
Regards,
Annette

Thank you,
I did see that, but I think I've come to the conclusion, that I probably wouldn't really know if I had the correct one anyway.

Re: RCE John Strathie
If his address in 1874 was Overtown Polmont, it would be pretty conclusive, added to the fact his age and parents' names would be there.
I did finally track down Overtown/Overton, his address on the RCE :

move the blue circle to see a modern image - they are building lots of new houses over the top of it!

Had a look at the MC1874 between John Strathie and Jane Sharp, John was a railway guardsman, but the ironic thing is his father was John Strathie and was a Farm ????, Ploughman in brackets.

John Strathie's father was described as a Farm Servant (Ploughman). The address that young John gave, Joppa, Duddingstone, is nowadays within the Edinburgh city boundary, to the east side of Portobello, but there is nothing to indicate that is (or is not) his parents' home address.
All the best,

Re: RCE John Strathie
Curiously, neither of the couple's addresses given are in the Polmont parish, admittedly Linlithgow is just a hop away.
Though rereading, nelmits edited post, the bride was born there.
