Seeking William Strachan, Kincardine, 1817/18 - 1899

Post by GordonFindlay » Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:42 am

One of my GG-Grandfathers was William Strachan, for whom I have these details:

Married Mary Paterson, 18 Jun 1842, Bervie, Kincardine.
He was living in Arbuthnott, Kincardine at marriage.
Had (at least) 6 children, 1843-1854, all born in Kincardine.
Died 6 Aug 1899, Bervie, Kincardine.
Census data:
1851: Whistleberry, Kinneff, Kincardineshire, Scotland, with wife, and four children. Agricultural Labourer.
1861: Nethermill Cottages, Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland, with wife and four children. Ploughman.
1881: Kirkhill, Dun, Forfar, with wife and grandson Wiliam A Allison. Agricultural labourer.
1841, 1891: can't find him, although there are a few prospects in Aberdeenshire bothies for 1841.

The census data implies that he was born in 1817 or 1818, Laurencekirk, Kincardine. This is confirmed by his death certificate and a daughter Jane's marriage registration.

I cannot find any details of his birth, in Scotland's People or Find My Past. I'd really ike to find his birth date and parents' information.

Any ideas?

Hello Gordon and [TS_welcome]

William and wife Mary are still in Dun, Angus in 1891, giving Laurencekirk as his birthplace as usual.

Like you, I don't see his birth, so it may not have been registered or his family may not have been Church of Scotland. There were many Episcopalians in that area and I have relatives in the same area and time frame who can't be found for that reason. What parents are given on his death certificate?

Best wishes,
Sarah

Thanks Sarah.

William Strachan's death certificate simply has "[No Information]" written in place of parents.

His death was notified by Jane Paterson, a sister-in-law, and she simply may not have known, or bothered to find out. Which leaves room for speculation - maybe he was a foundling :D

Frustratingly, there are several other Strachan's in my family from the same general area, but I can't find a link to them.

Thanks for that Annette.

That gives me his details at every census, and consistent dates as well (given the rounding off in 141). I doubt his birth was recorded - but funny things happen in genealogy.
