This was part of a longer post on the census board, but I think it is better here:
I am searching for a death certificate James McCormick, born in February 13 1860 in Anderston Glasgow. I have his birth certificate, but he does not appear on the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 or 1901 with the family. I have his mother's and father's poorhouse applications (thanks Nelmit) and he is not mentioned on them either. I have had a few transcriptions of poorhouse records given to me, and when children are not mentioned it usually means they have died - but I know it isn't always the case.
Also he had a sister born January 1 1867 in Clyde, (I have her birth too) Helen, and I can't find her on anything either.
So after a lot of searching, I can't find a registration for either child in the assumed periods of 1861-1871 for James, or 1867-1871 for Helen. I have searched for longer time intervals, but I can't recall offhand how far I went. Both children just disappear!
For all searches mentioned above, I have used wildcards: McCorm*ck, McCorm*c*, M*cCorm*ck, et etc although I know at this time period the name was mostly recorded as McCormick. It later changed to McCormack.
Thanks for reading,
Nina

Me again
Have you tried *el*en for Helen?
I had a look between 1867 and 1871 and there are 4 one seems to be Ellen.

Re: death certificates
Hello Nina,
no joy yet with the deaths. Just to save some time, what were Catherine's ages and places for the censuses?
Regards,
John

Hi Nelmit and sporran,
I did try that search Nelmit, no luck. I have searched all of Scotland for Helen, and she is not there. Looking for her has cost me many credits...
Sporran, were you asking about Helen or her mother Catherine? Am a little confused. If it is Helen, she never appears on a census. Born 1867 and not on the 1871. James is similar. Born 1860, doesn't appear on the 1861 (thanks for that by the way) or 1871...
I have the birth registration certificates for both children, James was born in Anderston and Helen was born in Clyde. But no luck on deaths.
I had a terrible thought that maybe the children were given away or done away with...not as far out as it seems...they may not have been their father's children as he spent a LOT of time in jail.
This only occurred to me after a lady I know looked at the poorhouse record (thanks nelmit!) , which doesn't mention James or Helen and said "Oh that is when the father must have spent time in jail, see the gap between children?" And then I said, no she had three more in those years (one is accounted for wholly)....and then it was "Hmmmmm.....!!!" Hehe, it is better than any mystery movie!

Re: censuses
Hello Nina,
it's mother Christine that I am after in the censuses. I found both births to which you referred but no deaths, and I wanted to track the movements of the family to narrow down likely places for the deaths.
Regards,
John

Hehe Sporran, mother is Catherine.
They were a bit nomadic in their habitaiton:
In 1859 at birth of daughter Catherine: 18 1/2 or 181 Stobcross Street, Anderston.
1861 Same address for birth of James
1861 Census 38 London Lane, Calton (thank you!)
1862 Poorhouse record noted address at birth of Samuel: St Andrew's Square Calton?
1864 at birth of William: 12 Princes Street, Clyde
1867 Same address for birth of Helen
1871 Census 85 Old Vennel, Blackfriars
1871 at birth? and death of Michael 29 Bridgegate, Clyde
1875 at birth of Joseph 97 Saltmarket Blackfriars
1881 census 5 Blair Street Barony.
So you see, they moved around quite a bit, hehe.

Samuel
Hi Nina,
I see you did not mention seeing the birth entry for Samuel - just the poorhouse application.
I looked it up on the IGI and he has been given a middle name of James. I wonder if this is significant

Annette M

Hi Nelmit,
Yes I do have his birth certificate and it says Samuel James, and in fact when he grew up and had children he called his first son James. I think that if baby James had died, that this was their way of carrying on the name, but of course it is only a guess.
I made an error up there.. James was born in 1860, not 1861. Right address though.
A poster on my thread over on the census board asked if they could have died in England...well I suppose it is clearly possible for Helen...four year gap there...but less so for James, as the time frames are closer.
And if they did die in England...well I wouldn't know how to go about even searching for that!
Time to get my head down tonight, but I will think more about this in the morning.

Re: no death certificates
Hello Nina,
I have looked extensively but there is no sign of either death in SP unless they are lurking under really weird (mis-) transcriptions. If the children died in England, a quick look on FreeBMD (not 100% coverage) shows many McCormicks. Unless the family has strong associations with a particular place, going down that route will be difficult, especially since certificates cost £7.
Sad to give up, but I think that is the only realistic course left to you.
Regards,
John

Just a thought here.
I had a missing birth or death in this area / timeframe.
Having searched long and hard with no trace on SP, and knowing that they couldn't have gone far, I emailed GROS.
I was informed that due to density of population, that some entries were not on SP and that they were in "annexed" registers. They found what I needed and sent me a copy.
