James Richmond

Post by Wee Ann » Fri Mar 30, 2007 1:47 am

Morning All :)

At Christmas time I had a letter from a cousin of mine which included a photograph of my great grandmother Jane Richmond.(Born in Boleskine, Inverness-shire about 1849 married to Donald McPherson on the 21st June 1870 in Boleskine).

Not a very clear picture, and she was depicted holding a baby, who was not identified. There was also one of her father "James Richmond of Knockie". This was a far clearer picture and he looked like a fine looking man.

Up until getting the photograph, I didn't have the name of Jane's father, and I have tried to go further, but have not had much luck.

Unfortunately, my cousin (lovely fellow though he is  ) is not the most reliable correspondent and although I have written and asked if he has more information, I feel it might be more than a day or two before he replies.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me in this :?: Maybe point me in the right direction :?:

It would be very much appreciated :)

Best regards

Wee Ann

Hi Wee Ann

You may have this. On the IGI there is a birth of Jane Richmond in Dec 12, 1848 in Boleskine, Inverness. Parents are James Richmond and Mary Mackeachan.

On the 1851 Census for Boleskin and Abertarff at 5 Knocky Lane:
Jane McEachan age 21
George Richmond " 5
James Richmond " 36
Jane Richmond " 2
Mary Richmond " 29
Thomas Richmond 3
Thomasina Richmond 7
Alan Riggs 42
Alexander Ross 21
James Stockhart 18
John Cameron 15
Ann McDonald 25

If these are your ancestors there is a good chance of getting a death Cert. on SP, to be able to find out more about them.

How lucky you are to have a picture of your GGrandmother.

Regards

Sheila

Sorry, Sheila, I see you just posted the 1851 also, but since I had already typed it out...

Hi Wee Ann,
Fortunately, in the 1861 census James narrows his birthplace down to Lancashire-- whew! By tremendous good luck, there is only one James Richmond born in Lancashire in 1815 +/- 2 years in the IGI:

James Richmond
Birth: 13 Dec 1813
Christening: 25 Dec 1815 Cockerham, Lancashire, England
Father: William Richmond
Mother: Sarah

Sure didn't believe in the Scottish naming pattern, did they? :?

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. These two, the birth in 1813 and the christening in 1815 are on the same, extracted, record. So either there was a typo or he was not christened until he was two. Note later: I see he and his younger brother William were christened at the same time.

And here is their marriage:

William Richmond & Sarah Bond
01 MAR 1802 Cockerham, Lancashire, England

Judith arrived just 7 months later [-X

This could be William's birth:

William Richmond

Thank you so much Sheila and Sarah.

I think you are right, the death certificate is the only way to go. He was born too soon to be traced on Find My Past which would be my next move for some one born in England.

I'll keep on looking. The information has to be somewhere.

Thanks again

Hi again,

By 1841, Sarah is widowed

Kockshort House, Ellel Township, Cockerham, Lancashire
Sarah Richmond, 60, Knitter, born in county
Sarah Do, 23, born in county
Joseph Do, 6, born in county
William Do, 1, born in county

She is gone by 1851, though. This could be her death, since Cockerham was in the district of Lancaster.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1983
Name: Sarah Richmond
Year of Registration: 1843
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Lancaster
County: Lancashire
Volume: 21
Page: 308

This could be William's death, although he could also have died before 1837:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1983
Name: William Richmond
Year of Registration: 1838
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Lancaster
County: Lancashire
Volume: 21
Page: 283

Unfortunately, neither of these death records give birth dates, so it is just a guess if they are the right people. :?

Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for all that wonderful information.

Sorry I had to dash off before thoroughly reading your posts, but I'm home now and trying to come to terms with all you have found out for me. :?

It is a bit bewildering to go from little or no information to scads of it in one afternoon. :o

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :) :) :)

Lots of work to do now

Kindest regards

Ann
