Mitchell ancestors

Post by famillemitchell » Sat Nov 03, 2007 3:59 pm

I am particularly interested in finding out about my ancestor Andrew Mitchell who was born in c1801 in King Edward Aberdeen and lived in Ramsburn Rothiemay. I know from his death record that his mother was Martha Panton c1781 but his father is simply given as '-Mitchell' Andrew went on to marry Isobel Keith and they had eight children. It seems probable that Martha and Andrews father weren't married as I have found later records of her still using the name Panton.

any help would be very much appreciated
Mike

Hello Mike,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]
A quick look at the catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland seems to indicate that the King Edward Kirk Session records still exist for the time that interests you. With any luck, they will mention the illegitimate child of Martha Panton and ___ Mitchell, since scolding couples for "fornication" seems to take up most of the Kirk Session minutes that I have seen :D Tiresome for your ancestors, but nice for you!

At the moment the kirk session minutes can only be seen if you go in person to the NAS in Edinburgh, but I believe there is a plan to have them available on Scotlands People-- not sure when.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Mike,

Looking for clues I checked the Hugh Wallis middle name site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/ for a Panton/Mitchell combination in Aberdeen. All that came up was a marriage which appears on the IGI as:

JOHN PANTON SMITH MITCHELL
Spouse: MARY JANE RUNCIE
Marriage: 01 DEC 1864 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland

I’m sot sure how unusual the Panton/Mitchell combination is in Aberdeen. Possibly not helpful to your present enquiry but I thought I'd better post it here in case it is relevant and you haven't come across it before.

Have you been able to work out Martha's approximate date of death?

Alan

Mitchell/Panton

There seems to be something very strange going on - in order to find more clues about Martha Panton I decided to search on Scotlands people for the others listed as living with her on the 1851 census and I can't find any records for them!

Does anyone have any idea why this might be?

Hi Mike
Can you give us some names, expected locations and ages for the missing folk?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Mike,

This isn't much, but...
Could this be Martha's sister Elisabeth (from the 1851 census) in 1841? Her age and occupation fit.

Name: Elisa Panton
Age: 59
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1782
Gender: Female
Where born: Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Civil Parish: King Edward
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: New Byth
Occupation: Stocking Knitter
Parish Number: 210
Household Members: Name Age
Chas Cowie 2
Barbara Hepburn 30
James Oliphant 8
Elisa Panton 59

Did you see the death on SP of a Martha Panton in the year 1859-1860 in Midlothian?

Nadine
Stevenson/Campbell - St. Ninians, Stirlingshire
Robertson/Hogg - Polmont, Stirlingshire
Burnfield/Ross - Perthshire
Buchanan/McQueen - Argyll & Inverness
Stewart/Gilzean - Elgin, Morayshire

Hi Mike,
Just a wee bit to add to what Nadine has found.
I know you have the 1851 census; it's just to compare with 1861...which you may also have...
The relationships to Martha of the two youngest in 1851 doesn't seem right.
William Henderson possibly became a tailor & married Ann Keith in 1861.
Looks like Barbara (12) in 1841 was a female servant with farmer George Wood.

Martha Panton

Post by famillemitchell » Mon Nov 05, 2007 10:11 pm

Excellent thank you - this information is very welcome I haven't had time to digest it all yet and see how it ties up with what I already know - but I still don't understand why I can't find birth records for these people!

Interesting too about the Martha Panton death in Midlothian- I hadn't spotted that one

Thanks again
Mike
