Hi Ellen,
I am sure you are right that that is Sophia in Fifeshire. On her MC in 1864, she was listed as a domestic servant. While she was definitely in Aberlady when she married, I can't find her anywhere in 1861, either?
No luck, me either, on the others. Alas! Where James & Susan were at the '51 census is open to conjecture. I do know that their elder son, Edward b. Dover, Kent in 1826 was in Ireland. He was a Mess Man with the Royal Engineers & seemed to move about with them. Edward's second son, George Tobias, was born in Ireland in 1852. I really suspect James & Susan may also have been linked with military movements but have no proof.
Interestingly son Edward's 3rd child, Mary Jane, turned up in Edinburgh to be married to Arthur Wray in 1877. (In 1871, she & her father were in Farnborough.)
I gave it my best shot but found nothing more on Eliza, either by census or at SP looking for a marriage or death. I may well have overlooked her or perhaps she died young? I do have Thomas, my GG Grandfather, neatly in East Lothian. Not a clue as to what became of his parents.
You have been so helpful & even without the 1861 census, I think I can assume that Sophia stayed in Scotland until she married? Nice to see her in '51 to confirm that supposition.
Thanks for explaining how you found them in the grand first venture in 1841. I am still shaky on searching & really appreciate such tips. If nothing else turns up... I really am so much further forward than a week ago.
It would seem that on this side, my Scottish roots are rather shallow!
Gratefully yet again, Rosalie
