Ailsa,

Hope this isn't a red herring:

1841 Census

Name: Dougald McFarlane
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland

Civil Parish: Govan
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Thomson Lane
Occupation: Saw Sharper
Parish Number: 646

Household Members: Name Age
Margt Chrystie 20
John Howie 35
David Leighton 30
Dougald McFarlane 20
Isabella McFarlane 4
Margt McGaw 2 Mo

If you allow for the rounding off on ages for the adults, this could be your Dugald with Margt Chrystie for his wife. Isabella McFarlane's birth would have been in 1837 which agrees with the 1851 Census. Also this Dugald is a Saw sharper!

Hi Carol,

Not long back from Glasgow and my old mum has no internet connection! Thanks for looking at the McFarlanes for me. I have been looking for more info on SP but have not had much luck. You would think the name Dugald would be easy to find.
I can find no trace of the name Dore Cotland so i think it is Ancestry's gobbledigook.
I have tried birth dugald m**farl*n* 1760 -1854 and came up with 24/3/1774 born to Peter McFarlane and Margaret Graham in Port of Menteith Perth.
If Isabel was not born in Glasgow - i tried 1830 - 1854 parents James and Margaret only came up with james and Margaret Chisholm in Dundee in 1840.
Maybe i am doing the wrong type of search - when i have more time i will have another go - as you know doing this eats up the time!!

Thanks again,
Ailsa

Ailsa,

Well, I'm disappointed. Dore Cotland was so different I thought it must be a real place not just an Ancestry creation! I have several of those names like Dugald that seems so obvious and are so missing! I'm on the road right now staying with friends who have high speed internet--a real treat for me-so I'm madly downloading and searching.

Good hunting!

Help please

Hi all,
Back to this old chestnut below. I am going round in circles looking for confirmation of the wife of Dugald below.
I think this is the right family and if i can pinpoint a birth cert of one of the children below it should give me the mother's name.
I have just done a search on SP for: birth of m**farlan* no forename but Dugald as the father. Dates from 1835 to 1854 all districts. Assuming as below that all children bar one were born in Partick - it came back with 17 none of them in Glasgow and none with any of the below names.
Another of the same search but omitting Dugald as father brings up over one thousand.
My problem is that I'm not sure where Partick comes under in the Glasgow City search so i can narrow it down.

Any help appreciated.

Here's an 1851 Census for you to consider:

James McFarlane 6 yrs born abt 1846

Father: Dugald
Mother: Margaret
Partick, Lanarkshire
Govan
Dumbarton Road Bruce Place

Dugald McFarlane 35
Margaret 31
Isabella 14
Margaret 7
James 5
Dugald 2

Didn't get Dad's occupation. Will go back and get that now!
