I looked up the Catherine Campbell birth and the address is 139 Saltmarket. Mother Margaret Campbell, shirtmaker. I cannot find Joseph or Margaret or Charles in the 1871 census. There are quite a number of Margaret Stewarts and also Charles Stewarts and I viewed a lot of them until my credits ran out. I also looked at quite a few deaths for Joseph between 1869 and 1876, there are not that many but none of them is him. I am beginning to wonder if he died somewhere other than Lanark.
I guess you are right, it is back to the drawing board, at least until I can afford another bunch of credits.
Thanks, Cathie
Nothing to add except a bit of advice when searching the census and you are not sure of district.
In this case when you search for Charles St*rt in Lanark age between 2 & 3 you get nine 'hits' all Stewart. If you search for Margaret Stewart in Lanark age 20 -25 (in case of any wee fibs, although if you have her marriage that is another check on her age) you get 44 'hits'. Looking at these three pages will cost you 3 credits.
You can then compare all the GROS data and if you come up with a Margaret and a Charles with the same GROS number then you could view that record as it means there is a Charles and Margaret Stewart on the same page.
I gave them as an example as I think you've searched all you can for them.
I have found this method fairly successful when searching for common names. I know it won't always work if they are apart on census night but I alway think it's worth a shot in the first instance and cheaper than looking at all the wrong records.
Hope you followed all that.
