As so often the case on TS, the joint effort produces the goods !

The key here is William the Baker's place of birth as Milngavie, in that there aren't that many SMITHs born there, and, Ancestry hasn't mangled Milngavie in the transcription. ( "Lufulcer Fitter (Retired)" in a another very recent 1901 search turns up as the occupation, when in 1891 the man appears clearly as a "Engine Fitter". Whether or not the 1901 '"Lufulcer" should be 'Engine' or 'Engineer's' fitter is a moot point, I'll allow.)

On the Ancestry Scottish census indexes it's possible to search on the basis of the place of birth, which leads to the family in Govan in 1891. There's only one new kid in 1891, - 9 year old Archibald. So that's Robert, William, and Mary from 1871, plus Sarah, William (the first William died presumably), and Agnes from 1881.

1901 is a bit more of a problem. Mary turns up with no husband, just daughter Sarah in the household, but marital status "Married", i.e. not a Widow. A complication here is that Ancestry doesn't recognise East Kilbride as a place name for Mary's place of birth, but is happy with " Kilbride, East " ! Be warned in terms of similar place names.

William turns up on board the SS Stromboli at Liverpool as a Steward. It's obviously a Scottish ship from the crew. That this is him is confirmed by his place of birth as Milngavie, and age, which is not far off.

Once you learn the particular rules of the Ancestry search engine and the way in which search results are presented, I'm getting to like it more and more, given all the various fields that can be searched compared to ScotlandsPeople, e.g. place of birth, occupation; linking to parents, spouse, or others in the household, etc.,; this despite the fairly frequent nonsense transcriptions, see above for an example ..........

For anything approaching a problem Scottish census search, my first port of call now would be Ancestry, with ScotlandsPeople only being used to view the image.

My father, John Hugh Wilson, was 1st cousin to the William John Candlish Smith listed. Bill Smith married May <don't know her maiden name> and lived his married life in Wainui-o-mata, near Wellington, New Zealand.

They had no children of their own but they adopted a boy and a girl.

Dad's mother was Marion Banks Candlish, also known as Minnie. Curious that her first name was so similar to that of her sister! I never knew Bill's mother's name but I had a feeling that she lived in Invercargill, New Zealand - a very Scottish area of the country. I also knew that she had been a stewardess at sea.

While he was alive Bill had in his possession a Coat of Arms linking the surnames Wyllie and Weir. I have a photographic copy of this but unfortunately it has faded over the years.
