Was it so unclear on the DC in the Gallery?
Sorry, just teasing. It is Newington Cemetery, which was in private hands until fairly recently, but which has now been taken over by the council, and which is being cleared up as time and funds permit.
There is a special Jewish section which has apparently always been kept in reasonably good condition and is indexed and photographed: http://www.newingtoncmy.fsnet.co.uk/default.htm
See also: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/3084200.stm
which shows the extent of the problem.
Argyll also carried out a policy of laying flat all gravestones that were unsafe after noting the inscriptions, and has since been erecting them, I am assured. I can understand their dilemma after hearing of a death in a cemetery. Hope they all don´t take too long tidying up.
The Scottish Genealogical Society has MIs of this and many other graveyards: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Lothians_MI.html

Hi Lesley,
To find information about MIs in Edinburgh, try:
http://a2z.edinburgh.gov.uk/displayEntr ... tleID=4627
which is I hope a link to a contact form giving access to an assistant answering queries regarding records of cemeteries in Edinburgh, which are maintained by the council at Mortonhall Crematorium.
There is also an informative website here, "Burial Grounds of Edinburgh", with some monochrome images:

Whatever next, as Meg so succinctly put it!
Good hunting,
Thrall

I think he is referring to the death of a child when a unsafe gravestone fell onto them.A lot of Cemeteries have "condemmed" what they consider "unsafe" headstones& have laid a charge against relatives to have them made safe.garibaldired wrote:Thrall wrote "after hearing of a death in a cemetery"
