Both or all.
It's a good way of tracking the right one down by cross referencing the reference numbers.
Of course it's only as good as the information given at the time of death :(
On the new scotlandspeople site, one of the enhancements will be the ability to carry out such a crosscheck search.

Timing for release of the new site..... ask me again in a month !! User Group members have been given access to a test version, but only a very small amount of data has been added so far.

That will certainly make searching more efficient and give better results...

Look,This is very old and just stumbled upon it a couple of years ago.Was trying to get in touch with Wendy above as I have my relatives back to James, the son of Hugh and Ann (nee Paterson) who were married in Rutherglen parish on the 29th May 1836. He was a blacksmith and my family from that Generation on were all from the Riccarton area. The census make complete sense with names and ages and family members. I need to delve into Rutherglen parish records to get Hugh Andersons birth date, although it's between 1810 and 13 I believe.my family father name goes back Hugh/James/Hugh/James/Hugh , so will start with a James in Rutherglen with a birth date around the 1790 period. If anyone knows how to get in touch with Wendy or could pass on my email address I would be grateful for any help. Or a recommendation of anyone who can search Rutherglen parish records.
Thanks WG_andersonAThotmail.com. Now in Adelaide Australia.

Ps The parish marriage notification is the first that doesn't have fathers names.

Just checked and Wendy hasn't been on site since December 2009 however if she still is active and using the same e-mail address your post should pop up in her in-box. Fingers crossed :) (my grandson suggests toes crossed too :D ) We never consider any enquiry post closed. Who knows ? activating it after so long may bring in an other Google searcher. It won't be the first time.
Did you try the PM (Personal Message) button on any of Wendy's posts ?
