There is a Peter GILLON & 3 children in Old Kilpatrick 1851, but wife appears to be Ann....
I think it would be very useful for you to find Hugh in the 1861 & 1871 censuses. Jack

So Ann could well have been as KEENAN later on....
And here's the census index details from 1851.

Sad to say that since Hugh's mother died when he was just 8 he may have forgotten her name.

Can't see any of the family in 1861 but they had moved to Govan by 1862 when Peter mark II was born. I checked for Peter, Thomas and Hugh with age ranges plus or minus 5 years for Peter and plus or minus 2 years for the boys.

No sign in 1871 either.

Other weird thing is that Hugh had a twin brother, Peter, who must have died before the next Peter arrived in Govan in 1862 but there's no death for him.

So I suppose it's possible that the family flitted between Ireland and Scotland.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

ps, do you know it takes me a half hour longer to get to Park Circus when the weans are at school.
But that's because of all the cars guised as kiddy taxis!

Thanks everyone.

Did names really change that much?
I know I sound daft but all my research so far (English lines) has been pretty straightforward name-wise. And the Scottish certs seem to give so much more info than the English ones. The last thing I want to do is give myself the wrong ancestor!

Were any of the witnesses on Hugh's 1878 MC a possible brother?
Does his DC give the same parents as the MC?
witnesses were James Conaghan (don't know) and two of Mary Browne's siblings.

Haven't found his death cert. Have just used up my credits hunting and am 'not allowed' to buy more for a week!

Thanks Elsiegee,
I was just hoping it would be one of Hugh GILLAN's brothers on his 1878 MC.
Either Thomas, Francis or Peter - James born 1864 might've been a bit young.

But maybe only Hugh himself remained in Scotland?
Can't see any of the others with any certainty in the 1881 census.
They may have died, or as Andy said, maybe the family flitted between Ireland and Scotland.
--
There is an Old Kilpatrick born Thomas GILLEN (35) of the right age in 1881.
[married Margaret BURNS in 1872 as Thomas GLEN - but wrong parents anyway - Hugh GLEN & Mary SMITH]
He was possibly married to a Margaret BURNS in Shettleston, Glasgow 1872.
But there were TWO Thomas "GILLON"s on the 1851 Old Kilpatrick census born abt 1845.
So he might the the one that was with the Smiths.
1851 census Old Kilpatrick.
Thomas GILLON 5 yrs (with Peter GILLON & Ann) - most likely "yours".
Thomas GILLAN 4 yrs (with Janet SMITH 62 & Jeanie SMITH 26)

There shouldn't be too many DCs of a Hugh GILLAN, and i hope the informant got his parents right.
And not just copied what was said on his 1878 MC....
I think they should be Peter GILLAN & Ann KEENAN (or similar).
