Treat spelling as unimportant in these matters. Finlayson, Findlayson, Finlyson that all appear on the IGI for these people should count as the same name. Similarly the name Marjoribanks is usually pronounced as Marshbanks or Marchbanks, so count that (and Marjibanks) as the same name as Marchbanks on your family tree.
It is not a matter of poor spelling or sloppy use of English. In older times (loosely speaking pre-20th century) the spoken word was more important than the written word, so spelling varied greatly. Poor literacy had a hand in this too, but should not necessarily be regarded as the main cause. Don't get hung up on the "no, my lot never spelled their name that way" way of thinking.
