Hi Bob

As John said there is only one John Miller Wilson born in 1885.

It is important to put the name Miller into the search.

The place of birth is very near to Edinburgh. Believe me I used to live near there!! Only one spelling of Edinburgh, by the way.

Jean

PS From Christina's b.c. you get the date of her parents marriage - 29 Apr 1857.......another certificate for you to find.

Hello Bob,

John Wilson is indeed a common name, but Wilson with forenames John Miller is rare, and only one in 1885. Feel confident about looking at that one.

There are several variations of place name endings with borough, such as Middlesbrough and Edinburgh (there is no Edinborough). They are pronounced 'burra'.

Regards,

John

Jean and John,

Thank you so much. It never occurred to me to put John Miller into the forename box. Learn something new everyday as they say. Thanks again for all your help.

Bob

For those of you not aware of the source of this info, it's from IGI. When IGI was compiled, to assist church patrons with their research, information from Scottish statutory birth and marriage registers for the period 1855 to 1875, plus 1881 and 1891 was included, - hence the above listing of children recorded in the register books of birth for these parents. They were married in 1857, so there probably aren't any pre-1855 OPR records.

It's always a bit of a niggle when there's a name difference.

In this case, on her marriage register entry Christina's father is James MILLER, Spirit Merchant, Bottler.

On her probable 1864 birth register entry, he is John MILLER, Bottler, and in the very probable 1871 census entry for the family he is John MILLER, Bottler, along with wife Christina, and daughters Helen K, 12, born Glasgow (see above), and Christina C, 7, b Glasgow.

Soooo..... somebody near certainly got his name wrong on the 1881 marriage register entry. (For full legal proof it would be necessary to show that there wasn't another matchinh Christina MILLER in the records.)
