Well that would explain why I couldn't find Isabella's BC in Berwick #-o

What was that I said about assuming anything #-o

So, in this short space my family has grown by three new surnames and a whole load of potential rellies

I need [5 cups]

Hi Mary

Pour one for me. [5 cups]

Alison Crombie doesn't want to be found, does she. :?:

I've tried all sorts of wildcards on SP but she's not to be found in Berwick, never mind Eyemouth.

Perhaps she's in Weymouth

Best wishes

Jean

Hello Mary,

Jane Crombie was born in Eyemouth on 5th December 1857 to James Crombie and his wife Agnes, ms Collin. The 1861 census for Eyemouth has those parents with Alice aged 3. There is no RCE on the birth or a death for Jane between 1857 and 1861, so I can but conclude that the family changed her name, and she became known as Alice or Alison.

Regards,

John

Hi Mary
I actually live in Eyemouth, so know it very well. These names are very common to Eyemouth with Crombies still in the town.
William Crombie & James Crombie whom Jean found on the 1881 were actually both lost at sea in the 1881 Great Disaster. Go to Geocities.com/scotborder/eyemouth.html for more info. Williams wife was Mary Waters & James wife was Alison Fairbairn.

Thanks Caraid.

Maybe it's just me but geocities seems to be having problems at the mo. Will try again later.

"My" James Crombie, married to Agnes Collin, died in 1880 at age 48, apparently in the Harbour at Eyemouth. Cause of death is empty, but the notation in the margin says "Result of Recognition, vide Reg of Corr Entries Vol ? Page 61 14th January 1881".

Roll on the RCE's coming online :D

Just found the Scotsman article about James Crombie's 1880 death in Eyemouth Harbour. I've taken a week subscription to their archives as I have a few bits and bobs I want to check up on.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-983

People must have been there when it happened, so would the cause of death not have been entered on the original DC until some kind of enquiry was undertaken, hence the January 1881 RCE, I suppose.

AndrewP very kindly emailed me the list of names from the disaster, many with details of wives and children. Sat here and cried when I started to realise the scope of the losses to the area.

Families of brothers, sometimes their father as well. Some all on one boat, others on different boats.

The families standing on the shore watching their men dying and not being able to do anything, although one man died trying.

For their fishing industry to have survived that kind of loss tells of the resilience of the folk that were left.

As my Grandmother would have said - It fair hurt my heart to read it.
