Hi Jack,

Sorry - I went to bed!
Yes it is odd. The only time I can find James is as the 12 year old in 1861 which is making me start to doubt it. He certainly wasn't the informant on his mother's death certificate in 1900 (that was a niece). And you'd have expected him to be with his parents in 1851 age 3/4. That's why I wondered about the second James with John and Elizabeth.............

That's interesting about the census cds too; Alexander & Elizabeth are certainly not indexed at SP under Dudgeon (famous last words!)in 1851. Perhaps on your recommendation I should invest in them too.

Thanks again, Jack.
Best wishes,
Meg

Hi Meg,
I've been playing about with SP, could this be how they have Alexander indexed in Newbattle 1851?

Ann Dudgeon, 33 - MALE

SP, Lothians CD, Ancestry - all say there are 14 Dudgeons in Newbattle, and one is aged 33.
Only SP says there is an Ann; a 33yr old "male"....

ps, possibly the original entry is as Alexr. or similar?, and someone at GROS has thought it said Ann.
pps, those Lothians FHS CDs are the best i've seen for any CD census indexes.
But as i've said, they don't include Edinburgh City itself - both have all other parishes though.

Jack,

I think you've hit the nail on the head there!
I tried accessing Lothians via the TS link but I get a "permission denied" message. Is the website down at the moment do you know?
I couldn't access it when I googled it either.

Hi Meg,

Seems the site is down - just a warning error message.
Hope it's only a temporary wee glitch.

Sarah,

As you say, what a surprise!
Next time I'll make sure I check there too. A salutary lesson indeed.

Best wishes,
Meg

PS For one minute there when I saw your name I thought you'd found James in the US!!!
