I've had a few strange ones whn researching my own tree. Below is an example of one from Martha Warnock Bradbrook's marriage. She was the daughter of James Bradbrook but for some reason her father disappeared and she was brought up by her half-aunt Janet McMillan. Her marriage rectord appears to read:

Martha McMillan
(My guardian's surname which I have always used, suits (?) me.)
Yarn Winder
(Spinster)

The last bit might be my bad eyes. She also has her father recorded as deceased at the time but I've not been able to establish if that was the case.

Hi Rab...Is it possible that it actually reads "My guardian's surname which I have always used instead, M.M." , the M.M. being initials for Martha McMillan? Just a thought :)

Hi

It is certainly the case that the husband of a married woman is presumed to be the father of her child. However if it can be proved that this is not the case, nowadays by DNA evidence but then by the length of time since the couple had seen each other etc, the presumption can be overturned. For it to be overturned however someone needs to want to prove the contrary, possibly the husband.

The courts certainly were in the past reluctant to find that the husband was not the father and all sorts of unlikely gestation periods were found to be possible.

Re the names, perhaps the person just preferred his or her mother's maiden name. I know a whole family of young people who use their mother's maiden name because their father's name could nowadays sounds as if it means a rather crude insult. The mother with real fortitude continues to use her husband's name.
