Hi Les
An inflamed bursa is supra-patellar bursitis, commonly known as 'housemaids knee'. That's no problem - but get a few bacteria in there and it becomes a whole new ball game.
I had a quick look at the Ormiston name and there were quite few around before the village of Ormiston was moved into a prominent position by being one of the first 'planned' townships in the country.
Google in the name and some of its history should come up.
Between 1600 and 1730 there were 75 OPR Births, 16 Marriages and 2 Wills & Testaments.
Between 1730 and 1850 there were 471 entries of that name on the 1841 census,
766 Births
472 Marriages
25 Wills & Testaments.
There is probably a link with the East Lothian area.
Could be interesting investigating that link.

Russell stated it was housemaids knee, well my neighbour is a painter and often he complains of sore knees. I guess it is part of the trade of being a painter. Some things just dont change over time do they.

Hi Stewie
Housemaids knee is when it gets inflamed without any infection being present.
In this case it appears that he had an open wound which allowed infection into the bursa and from there it got into the bloodstream.
Painters suffer from the same effects as housemaids. Up ladders one minute then hunkering down to paint the low part of a wall the next.
