Hi Mikokunsaki,

Don't know if this helps at all, but Meta is a german name. A Pet form of Margarete.

Hi again,

Seeing that I can't find a birth I'm now thinking she may have been born abroad as her father was apparently a soldier.

Can anyone tell me where a British soldier might have been serving in 1895, the year of her birth? She doesn't appear in the census for 1901 either so if this lead is correct, he was probably still serving abroad then.

Unfortunately I can't make a trip to London anytime soon, but it seems that would be my next bet. Some general information would be good now thanks.

I can't travel to the archives in London, and I'm finding the catalogue a little confusing.

Can I look online for Meta's birth or her father's service? And then order if the data is available? At moment I'm getting no hits but not sure how to search the war papers/enter the code..?

Sorry if sound confusing!

Well I'm back after a long hiatus.

SInce the 2011 census is out now I thought I'd have more luck looking for Margaret/Meta/Margarete/M* Macfarlane or Mcfarlane. She should be around 15 and according to relatives she said she moved to Glasgow to work at aged 14. So I expected her to be about somewhere, in Scotland at that time.

But no luck! And no luck with the parents (James Macfarlane and Sarah Young) either.

Can anyone offer tips for tracking her down? I've used almost all my credits up trying surname/forename variants, an age range of +/- 5 years, with or without the parents. Since he was listed as soldier on Meta's marriage cert I guess he might be overseas in 1911 or even dead but Meta should be there somewhere! Any more name suggestions?

I should add that her death cert doesn't list the name of her mother but is consistent as to her maiden name and age.

Hi Mikokunsaki.

I put "Meta" into the 1911 census - no surname & age from 14-18 and came up with 11. Two of them were Glasgow City. None of them had a middle initial of "Y". Could it possible that she is indexed under the surname of the people she was living with? Maybe just another needle in the haystack!

Sorry I couldn't check any further.

Regards

Christine.

Hi Mikokunsaki:

I knew a woman whose first name was Almeta and was called Meta her whole life. I tried that with Young and MacFarlane on SP. Also checked on IGI, with no luck though for Asia, Africa and even for Canadian records where British troops were aplenty in the late 1800s.
