Hello
i have found a P Mcrae age 37 in the 1901 census in Aldershot hampshire in the military in Stanhope & Wellington lines
born abt 1864 Midlothian a married corporal not sure in which regiment
Does anyone think that this could possibly be the missing Philip Mcrae Duncan that i am seeking ?????
I have had a look on sp for births of Philip Mcrae in Midlothian and can't see a match.
Where would i go from here to try to prove it's him ??
all suggestions gratefully received kind regards maggie

Hello Maggie,

No help with 1901, but in 1911 they’re all in Yorkshire.

Last names, First names, Sex, Birth year, Age in 1911, District, County
DUNCAN, PHILIP, M, 1864, 47, York, Yorkshire East Riding (with York)
DUNCAN, MARY JANE, F, 1871, 40, York, Yorkshire East Riding (with York)
DUNCAN, PHILIP MCRAA, M, 1898, 13, York, Yorkshire East Riding (with York)
DUNCAN, GEORGES MCRAA, F, 1897, 14, York, Yorkshire East Riding (with York)
DUNCAN, KEWETH MCRAA, M, 1895, 16, York, Yorkshire East Riding (with York)

(Their spelling, not mine)

Hello Maggie & Annette,

I’m glad I could help. Was he a soldier in 1911? If he is well and truly missing in 1901 he could well have been in South Africa, participating in the Boer War.

Here’s something about the 7th Fife Territorial Battalions, as mentioned in the Ancestry papers. http://thaneofife.org.uk/t7rh-ww1.html

Hello Alan

i dont think he was a soldier in 1911 unfortunatly he had flowery writing that is hard to make out but i think he was a cooper but the box where it states industry or service with which worker is connected i'm not at all sure it looks like contact colours ??? unfortunatly at the moment i'm unable to view the document on my system this vista dosent work as well as my old xp or maybe its just me being stupid( i'm just glad i printed it at the same time as i viewed it on line )or id post a portion of it for opinions as to what it says.
Kind regards
maggie

Hello Maggie,

If he was in fact a Cooper then there’s a very wide range of industries that could have employed him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooper_%28profession%29

I can’t recall what the main problem was with SP and Vista. Maybe it was it one of those things where changing the SP option to Direct Download helped.

All the best,
Alan
