Thanks all,
Got a bit excited after hearing all of that news with a twist in the tale. Could hardly sleep all night thinking about it, a couple of wee haufs did the trick for me.
I'll take all of your advice when i return back to the Promised Land with a working credit card. At least i know what to look for now.
All the best
Ray

Hi Ray
Note that you will need to bring with you photographic ID and a utility bill as proof of ID and a passport sized photo to obtain your free readers ticket to use NAS. See:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/searchRooms/preparing.asp
Sounds complicated, but it isn't really!
Here's a link to the Mitchell Library too - no readers ticket required last time I was there, but you do need t fill in a a form to give them detials of who you are:

Best wishes

Good news on one front - both the archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh are free to visit and view documents.I'll take all of your advice when i return back to the Promised Land with a working credit card.

Hi Lesley,
That sounds ideal to me, not having to pay for these things, bit of a bonus !
The utility bill might be a bit of a problem after having read the websites that you've posted. Not lived in the UK for some16 years now, so not had any bills to pay. However, i'll get around that hurdle when it comes along. A solution can always be found some way or another.
Thanks
Ray
