Thanks to everyone for their interest and help.

The actual entry is .....

30 Novemr 1851

C Young Catherine Herdman lauf.
p Robert Young
Emily Fiskin
Born 17th October

... which I would interpret as follows ...........

Catherine Herdman YOUNG was christened 30th November 1851, lawful daughter of Robert YOUNG and his wife Emily YOUNG MS FISKIN.

Catherine was born 17th October 1851.

It would be most unusual for such an OPR entry to be in error, otherwise the kirk session would have wanted to know whit ra' heck wis gauin oan !!

That written, as my Yorkshire cousins are wont to say, "Folks is queer!", and, without a detailed examination of the session minutes around the time of this OPR entry, I wouldn't want to comment further

Hello John,

I have a marriage certificate for a Matthew Kinningham to Margaret Foulis 23rd September 1859. Parents for Matthew are John Kinningham and Ann m.s. Riddell. Kinningham should actually be Cunningham. Margaret's name was Faulds. At her birth in 1836 she was Faulds and on her death cert. in 1864 she was Cunningham m.s. Faulds. I have various certs. to back this up.

Do you think I should contact GROS. If I hadn't seen the Kinningham marriage on the IGI I wouldn't have known to look for it under this name. I knew from Matthew's second marriage that he had been married before but couldn't find it on SP as even using wildcards I had assumed that it would at least start with a 'C' !

I'd be interested to hear what you think,

Regards,

Alison

Hello Alison,

if you have the evidence, then fill out the contact form. Someone else at some future point will be grateful not to go through the difficulties that you had in finding relatives.

At this stage, just mention the event(s) that you would like corrected, and that you have supporting evidence. GROS will contact you, and that is when you should supply the GROS references for the supporting data.

Regards,

John

Hello John,

I heard back from GROS today.

The gist of the reply is that as this was purely a spelling difference, it doesn't qualify for an RCE.

Oh well, I tried!

Hello Alison,

what! This has echoes of Monty Python "I ban't say the letter 'b'".

So when our monarch dies, will we have Cung Karl III on the throne?

John

I love the idea, John, but at least his descendants would know who he was. It's us poor commoners that have the headaches ](*,)

Hello Alison,

I have contacted GROS about getting a second opinion on this matter.
