1881 Census Place: Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland

Mary GILLAN M 23 F Ireland Rel: Wife
Hugh GILLAN 2 M Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland Rel: Son
Nicolas GILLAN 9m M Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland Rel: Son

This is part of my wife's family. Hugh snr married Mary Brown to whom he had several children -
Hugh
Nicolas - Foreman Engineer, Singer, Clydebank DNB - m Mary Kane - lived in Hawick St., Yoker
Millie - Header Teacher, Renton DNB
Agnes (Angel)
Anne - Met brother Willie in Florida
Hugh - Engineer - m Sadie Nolan in Mexico
Willie - Engineer. Went to America as draughtsmen met sister Anne in Florida
Frank - caulker Lobnitz Shipyard RFW. Lived in Hawick St., Yoker
John - turned to drink and died of same

As far as is known Hugh snr's mother was named Jane and was born in Ireland. He was a Foreman riveter & caulker in the Lobintz Shipyard, RFW. He owned, or had shares in, a gold mine in Mexico. Complimented by Mexican newspaper for building roads for the government.

The above information is from a letter written by my wife's father (Tony), to her brother, shortly before he died in 1998. Hugh Gillan and Sadie Nolan are their Grandparents

The reason we are having problems with this family is that they were Roman Catholic and, of course, will not appear in the OPRs.

Hope this helps someone :)

Hi Les:

A warm welcome to TalkingScot! It's great that you've jumped in with both feet.

I'm sure elsiegee1 will be thrilled with the information you've supplied, especially since she'd posted way back in August.
