Thanks Sarah, yes, maybe John won a scholarship, maybe he only needed to go to school in Aberdeen for a year or two to be qualified. I just don't know, but I guess I need to keep learning! Thanks.

This is a really interesting thread.
John Skinner bn.1803 is my 4th great grandfather. Its always a long shot when you google your ancestor but its turned up well.
Thank you to all that have contributed to it

Unfortunatley not, he never did have a son, with his wife jane, named after himself. Not sure if thats unusual or not. Or maybe it was because he already had one.

Hi Katie, sorry to be delayed getting back to you, but I had a short holiday and had limited internet access for a week.KatieSteele wrote:Unfortunatley not, he never did have a son, with his wife jane, named after himself. I'm curious about your comment here and wonder if you could explain please?
1. According to the 1841 census, John and Jane had 5 children at that time including 3 sons - David, Robert and Joseph. Are we definitely talking about the same family? Or perhaps none of them had any children and so the Skinner name stopped there? On what is your information about never having a son based?
2. What did you mean by "with his wife jane, named after himself. Not sure if thats unusual or not. Or maybe it was because he already had one"? I'm not sure I understand you.
This has been a difficult search with many mysteries, so I'm interested to get any information you have please? Thanks.
