This is not directly relevant for finding James' father's name, but:
There is what looks like a death for wee Andrew in 1871 in Ayr.
Agnes and Mary appear to have moved to Glasgow, where Agnes dies in 1895 age 72 (Anderston). At least there is an Agnes Muir, other surname m*w*l*m who dies then.
Could this be Agnes and Mary in 1881?
1881
3 Anderson St, Glasgow Kinning Park, Lanarkshire
Agnes Muir, Head, 52, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Shirt Finisher
Mary Muir, 18, Daughter, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Jar Finisher Confectioners
Jane Crosby, 26, Lodger, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Shirt Finisher
Charles McLeod, 16, Lodger, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Labourer Saw Mill
Got to go do something else now, but will check back later in case you have found something.
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Katrina,SarahND wrote:I noticed looking back on your other topic that Andrew had found what looked like James' death cert in 1875, but no parents listed
I don't see Agnes or any of the children in 1881-- what happened to them?AndrewP wrote: I found three "possibles" for James Muir deaths in Ayr in the right age group / estimated birth year. On looking at two of them, they can be ruled out (wrong spouse). The third one, in 1875, has him listed as a stone mason (was a mason on Margaret's dc). Unfortunately the informant (steward of the asylum) didn't know James' late wife's name, or his parents' names.
Anyway, James' death looks like it won't help, if that is his death in 1875.

Change of mind...
At the time I looked for James Muir's death, his second marriage had not been found. Now that we have the second marriage, to Agnes McWilliam, I have gone back to the three death certificates I looked at. Forget the 1875 one in the lunatic asylum. He is the 1877 death, as husband of Agnes McWilliam. The father's name is not given, but the mother is there as Jane Muir M.S. Park (deceased).
I will copy this information into the other topic on this family.
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks, Andrew. Now at least we know when he died, since the mother's maiden name is the same as on other records. Sure wish we could find something else with the father's name on it! I have a feeling he died very early on and his name would never have been known by those who came later. Was Agnes the informant on the death cert? Ah, I see you said she was in the other topic
All the best,
