Can anyone help, please!
I’ve been trying to find the DC for Anne/Agnes McKinney in hopes of finding out the names of her parents for ages…but no luck! She probably died in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire somewhere between the time her last child, Robert Scullion was born (BC 3 Feb 1873) and the death of husband, Hugh Scullion (DC 27 Nov 1881). His DC states “widower of Agnes McKinney”.
I’ve found her under various names on certificates/census forms, i.e. Ann(e), Nancy, Agnes/Mc Kinney, Mack, Scullion, and Scoulan. I’ve searched SP for Coatbridge and all of Lanarkshire trying the following:
1879 – 1881 M*C KINNEY in Lanark, Coatbridge;
1879 – 1881 M*CKINNEY, AGNES in Lanark;
1873 – 1881 M*K in Lanark, Coatbridge;
1872 – 1881 MCKINNEY in Lanark;
1870 – 1882 MCKINNEY, ANN in Lanark;
1873 – 1881 S*L*N, A* in Lanark, Coatbridge;
1870 – 1871 SCULLION in all counties and districts;
1872 – 1881 SCULLION in Lanark;
1855 – 1953 SCULLION in all counties and districts;
1873 – 1881 SCULLION/M* in all counties and districts;
Have I missed trying something obvious and/or is there anything else I can try to find my elusive great great grandmother? Thanks for any help.
Regards,
AnneH

The IGI gave the following children for this couple:
On checking the 1881 census, the only possibility that I could find was for daughter Margaret:
Did the other children die young? (pre-1881?) There is a Robert Scullion, age 0 death in 1873 in Old Monkland on SP; and an Ann Scullion, age 3 death in 1870 in Old Monkland.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,
Many thanks for checking into all this…I really appreciate your efforts.

Yes, all the children’s birth certificates state married Jan 1854 in County Antrim, Ireland. There is also a member submission on IGI with a marriage for Anne Mc Kinney to Hugh Scullin, marriage 1 Dec 1853 Rasharkin RC, Antrim Ireland and I’m inclined to think that’s the correct Hugh and Anne with an incorrect/different date. I just have to find out how to get in touch with the submitter.Have you checked the birth certificates to see what they say about the parents' marriage. Were they married? I could find no sign of the marriage on the online IGI. If there is a Scottish marriage certificate, then that should name all parents.
On the census for the Munro family, Kate Munro was Hugh and Anne Scullion’s daughter and Margaret Scullion’s sister. Actually the name is Roe on most of the certificates I found on SP (as it is today), but for some reason the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census has Munro. The death certificate for Thomas states “Thomas Roe (known as Munro)…so don’t know why the name changed back and forth.On checking the 1881 census, the only possibility that I could find was for daughter Margaret:
Yes, Hugh unfortunately died in the Monkland Canal in Coatbridge. There’s a note saying See Reg of Cor Entry. Vol 3, P 84 (looks like) December 9, 1881…I’d love to know what that says! The informant on the DC was son Daniel Scullion of 23 Alexander St., Airdrie…another one I haven’t been able to find anything on. (I couldn’t find Hugh on the 1881 census either).Was Hugh's death in Coatbridge? I didn't see any sign of him on the 1881 census.
Yes, Robert died at 7 weeks old, Ann at 2 ½, Mary who was born in Dirraw, Ireland 1864 died in Coatbridge about 5 ½ in 1870. I’m not sure what happened to Margaret, although I thought I had a marriage certificate that might be her, but can’t get my hands on it…my filing system isn’t what it should be. There was another son John that I found on the 1871 census along with father Hugh, mother Nancy and sister Margaret but can’t find any further trace of him either. That census was hard to find since SP had it under Scoulan...they did better then me at deciphering...I thought it looked like SeralanDid the other children die young? (pre-1881?) There is a Robert Scullion, age 0 death in 1873 in Old Monkland on SP; and an Ann Scullion, age 3 death in 1870 in Old Monkland.
Hi Annette,
Many thanks for looking into my plight.
You’re correct on daughter Mary being born in Ireland as was daughter Catherine (my great grandmother). Hugh Scullion and Anne McKinney were also married there.There also appears to be a child born in Ireland, so perhaps that is where they were married.
Again, many thanks to you both!
