Hello,
I wonder if someone can help me please. On my 4th great grandfather's death certificate (as well as another one I have come across) it states who he was married to when he died, and because he had been married previously it states who his former wife was. The only problem is it says "ILLEGITIMATE".
Can someone please explain to me what this means. The other certificate I have says "ILLEGITIMATE" as well - although their children's birth certs say when & where their parents were married (although I have searched LDS & scotlandspeople and can find no record of it).
PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME!!!!
Diane

Hi dinarina
I too have found the illegitmate notation on a DC. This refers to the birth record of the person that has just died and not their marriage or births of their children. For example my record shows Helen Paton, Married to Matthew Paton, Gardener (Illegitimate).
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Thanks for letting me know. When I read that, everything seems to fall into place now. Both persons that had died, I believe were illegitimate, even although their father's names were on the birth/marriage certs either in the form of "reputed" or "admitted".
Thanks again
Regards
Diane
