Help needed with address

Post by PaulaD » Wed Oct 03, 2007 6:45 pm

Hi All,

Have just uploaded a death cert to the gallery (I hope). Its the first time I've tried it so don't know if I've done it right :?

Anyway what I'd like to know is what is the address for informant James Stewart? I can see 3 ______ Bank.

Any ideas?

Hi Paula

Your image isnt visable to me, all i can see is what seems to be a postage stamp size image in the left hand corner. :?

Just seen the link.......could that fact that it is a "thumb" be the problem ?

Thanks Lesley and Tracey,

I think you could be right Lesley - in 1901 census he was just a couple of streets away just round the corner from the brewery where he worked. [5 cups]

Thanks again

Hi Paula,

Violet Bank was in the Abbeyhill/Meadowbank area of Edinburgh. It can be seen on an 1890s town plan at http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/edinburgh500_ne.html

Click on III.8.9 (bottom row, just right of centre)
Violet Bank looks like a row of houses near the top centre of that map.

A recent aerial view of that area shows that these houses are no longer there.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for that link. Found it at the bottom of that square. No chance finding out which brewery he worked at - there must be 5 in that small area  .
I thought Edinburgh was a city of maiden aunts :)
Well it was in the 50s when I grew up there.

Hi Paula,

There was one brewery within a few hundred yards of Violet Bank. Moray Park Maltings can be found on the map immediately above the one showing Violet Place.

http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/edinburgh500_ne.html
Click on III.8.4 and you will find Moray Park Maltings on the top left of that map. A short walk if the footpath tunnel under the railway just east of Violet Bank was used. The brewery there was demolished about 10 to 15 years ago. There is now a retail park there.

If it wasn't that brewery he was at, there were others in and around the Canongate area less than a mile away, including the one that was demolished to make room for the Scottish Parliament building.

All the best,

AndrewP

What surprised me the most was as he died in the Royal Infirmary of a perforated duodenal ulcer that there was no qualifed medical attendant to certify death.

Does that mean he perforated at home carried off to the Infirmary & died before a Dr examined him or he was in the Infirmary a day & still hadn't been seen by a Dr :?

Many moan about the NHS but I can't see it happening today.Looking for the emoticon which shows me eating humble pie!.
